It all started when I needed a take-down screw for my 10/22 projects and all I had was a couple of ugly ones that may be too far gone to restore

Image

The new ones are Allen/socket head and I don't think they look traditional

Image

So I bought some 1" long 12-24 Fillister head screws

Problem is they are zinc plated

so I soaked them in muriatic acid for a bit

Image

Then I wrapped the threads in tape and put it in my drill press, I turned down the head to fit into the factory stock escutcheon

Image

Then I turned down the top of the threads so it will stay trapped in the stock, like the factory screw, then a quick polish with sand paper

Then I blued them

At home in the stock

Nicely done

What's your setup for turning on the drill press? I've cobbled together tool holders and braces in the past to turn the odd thing but was always a bit nervous while using it

I just wrap the threads with tape and use a variety of files and then sandpaper
