I just got done putting my 1911 back together after a complete teardown. It was very intimidating at first but after lots of Youtube trolling I found 2 really good videos to help. There are so many bad ones out there,, bad light, poor instruction.. Also, you have a slight difference with series 70 and series 80 you have to sort out. My Kimber is a series 80, so that was also a plus with these vids.

Teardown:

Rebuild:

Related Teardown: :
I found this one funny but beware, he has some choice words..... It also seems to be a series 70 if I recall....

Im happy to report My Kimber is back together and functional in all aspects.

My only question is how much oil/lube does one use when putting back together? I didnt use much. I didnt see many videos claiming to use alot of lube.

I might just have to take it apart again... :D

Nicely done - how did we ever get anything done before youtube? Recently I've viewed videos to disassemble the bolt on my VZ-58 and how to butcher a deer. Took the laptop to the garage and all. PS - I still don't know how to butcher a deer. What an embarassing mess. But top work on the 1911!

Its crazy how much there is on that site. Takes a while to wade through it, but there can be some great stuff. I know how to work on my Mosin as well from watching videos. I used to spend lots of time watching photography stuff in my past hobby, as well as anything you want to buy, theres a review....

YouTube and Google haver become such a daily part of peoples lives, it's almost sad (and scary) to imagine a time where we do not have it..

Reminds me of that one Survivor episode (I think season 2 or 3), where the guy was constantly playing with his imaginary blackberry...

Yeah, seriously. I've asked myself that many, many times -- especially related to firearms.

When I first bought my Garand I completely disassembled it and had it lying on the table in about 30 pieces and had a "OMG WTF" moment. Youtube to the rescue!

And many, many other times as well.

Whats even more mind boggling to me is that Youtube has only been around since November 2005.

Seems like an eternity...

I also look at a few vids when I have an new project to start.
I found videos like these very helpful on my first 1911 disassembly.

Just a quick tip, the wife hasn't always approved of some of the tips I've picked up from certain other videos. :?

Well, tell her to watch them herself and decide which tips/tricks she DOES like, and then report back! Or better yet, watch them together and make a mutual, err, decision. ;)

Please remember: YouTube is not a replacement for an actual gun smith.

Glad you got the Kimber back together, Damon.

No? I learned on Youtube that i can put a penny under the sear spring on my Mosin so when I slam the bolt I dont even have to pull the trigger, so thats like a 0 pound trigger! lol.

Def good advice B!. Anything over strip and clean on the 1911 is for sure going to someone I know who works on them. icon_pray

And tonight, I too lost my virginity. Thanks, olydemon!

Perhaps I should clarify.

Thank you, olydemon, for the links to the videos. I got my RIA Tactical taken down and put back together without even damaging anything! The safety was kind of a bitch to get out, but I even managed to conquer that.

And in fact, the 1911 was actually relatively simple compared to some of my other guns. thumbsup
