So I have a 6.5 Carcano and a 7.35 Carcano. I finally got a box of ammo for each and the 7.35 chambers just fine but the 6.5 will not go into battery. That long round nose bullet seems to be contacting the rifling and the bolt needs to go about another 1/2” to be able to close it. I’m not sure what to make of it.Image

Hmmm, that's disturbing. Half an inch is a lot.

Are you certain that the 6.5 is actually a 6.5?

It clearly says 6.5 on the rear sight. Not sure what would be shorter. I’ll try pulling the bullet later and see if the case fits without it.

I guess the chamber was still loaded with gunk. After a second more thorough cleaning (scraping with dental tools), it’s chambering the round now.

That gun must of been stored in a really dirty environment.

To bad you are so far away, I have 6.5 carcano dies.

They were given to my brother. He had them for probably ten years and never did anything with them till he gave them to me. Apparently the previous owner never cleaned them because I had to put about sixty patches through each one.

I already got dies for the 6.5 and the 7.35. I could use more brass though. So far I’ve only bought 20 rounds each.

Well that sucks! The 7.35 did fine, but the 6.5 I fired one round and the case got stuck and broke the extractor opening the bolt. The primer fell right out. Upon removing the case, I found that there were dents in the case so apparently I didn’t get the chamber as clean as I thought. I’m not sure if the over pressure issue is because of the bullet being loose in the case and maybe got jammed in too far while loading or something else. I used factory ammo from Graf and sons. The bullets measure .2665 which is what is intended for the rifle. (although the .264 will work fine) I’ll be reloading with the .264 bullets since they’ll be cheaper, easier to get, have more variety and the sizing die is set up for that. That case is ruined since a new primer will just fall right in and out so I’m going to use it for checking seating depth with my neighbors gauge.

Anyone know a place I can get the chamber reamed properly, or have suggestions for what tool to use to get it clean and smooth?

Whoa . . . crap. Were you able to knock the case out?

Did the round feel like it shot ok? Do you think it was over pressure, or anything abnormal? It's weird that the primer would fall out.

Accidently posted before I was done typing. Edited above. I was using a sled with a remote firing mechanism but it didn’t blow up at least.

So it sounds like you had two (presumably unrelated) problems, a primer that fell out and a case that wouldn't extract.

Do you have reason to believe that you had an overpressure round, other than the primer that came out? Is it possible that it was just a case with a loose primer pocket?

As for the chamber, they're definitely dents (innies!) from crud in the chamber? And it won't come out with a good brushing?

They're not bulges (outies!) from pits/corrosion in the chamber?

Isn’t this the gun that killed JFK?

Clearly not. More than one shot was fired that day.

That is correct. Two problems.

I think the over pressure may have been from a bullet that was loose in the case. Not sure how that would affect it other than it could have gotten jammed in when loading it into the chamber, stripping it off the clip. I noticed it was loose before I loaded the clip and now I’m kicking myself for not removing that round. I know the loose one is what was fired because none of the others were loose. I could easily turn that one in the case.

Definitely dents, on one side. Like the side I couldn’t really see if I cleaned well. The other side of the brass was smooth. What I scraped off before looked like scales.

And this is after resizing.
The entire primer pocket is black also.
