are contributions and memberships counted seperately?
are the ages self-reported?

I didn't see the raw numbers, but I have no reason to doubt Gottlieb's report.
My guess is they are all "unique contributions" because that's how they count 'em
Ages are self-reported.
My understanding from reading his statement is that they found SAF via the internet. They searched and located. That's the interesting thing about search engines. Some people actually use them for useful stuff.
