Was there a surge in applications about 5 years ago? If people don't end up carrying a pistol, they are likely to let them lapse.

Ding ding ding!!!!! We have a winner. The Sandy Hook massacre happened five years and 4 months ago. There was a surge when our rights were attacked. Now those are expiring.

:plusone:

That's my guess, too. I knew several people who went and applied for their CPL for the first time because of the push for gun control after Sandy Hook. At least 2 of them did not renew, of that I am sure.

went down to renew today, The nice lady at the DMPD said things aren't how they used to be. She showed me a list of Agencies and departments that they need to clear to renew. The DSHS has two people working on permits and short gun/pistol sales for the state. Forever I have paid for my permit and walked out the door with it. Not anymore.......sure glad I decided to renew early. Wonder how long it will take to clear? The PD here does not mail out permits, they call you and you stop down to the PD 24/7 with your ID and get it. I like the idea, it would seem a lot more secure with nature of the permit.

As far as the numbers falling, apathy is probably the culprit

On the fifth day after I renewed I got the call to come and pick it up, on a Sunday even

I'm wondering how many CPL holders got Medical Marijuana cards, and are worried if they try to renew their CPL they're going to have trouble with the feds?

Sandy Hook was December 2012. There was a massive increase in CPL's in the months that followed.

We are now 5 years later, and probably a lot of people not renewing.

I'm fairly confident that there are a reasonable number of people who carry without permission, for various reasons. There are also probably a reasonable number of people who began carrying with the CPL after Sandy Hook, and counted the number of times they had to produce the little permission slip in the previous 5 years and included that data in the calculation/decision whether to renew or not.

Gun owners are getting old and dying off. It’s why we lost on 594, it’s why this new round probably will pass if we don’t throw it out. Look around people, we are the wooly mammoths if we don’t do anything about it. Right now we are outnumbered and they have won the propaganda war and we need to win it back. Take young people shooting, take the minorities shooting, get them involved otherwise we will only see gun owners in a museum, stuffed and mounted next to the dodo bird.

correlation is not causation. since you don't know the cause, why worry? what can you do about it that will have positive effect?
The "facts" quoted in the articles state:
January 2, 2013 = 392,784 cpl
November 2017 = 591,366 active CPLs.
August 2018 = 580,362 active licenses.
= decline of 11, 004 or ~ .02 over the first 8 months if 2018.
this statistically small decline is just as likely to be due to short-staffed late reporting as anything else. maybe it is the Blood Moon! what is the net population flux during this period? who cares? it is entirely possible the year ends up.
The trend from 2013 to 2018 is strongly up.

What about all the criminals that carry? They don't have to get a CPL. icon_eek

Call King County and ask about a CPL. They want you to schedule an appointment, possibly weeks ahead which can add another month to the CPL wait.

Often times these departments have limited hours only on specific weekdays.

Lots of people work 9-5 when CPLs are only processed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-4.

It may just be budget cuts, but they are making it harder to get a CPL through availability.

I'm going with this.

Every time I think about CPL I end up with the same conclusion: where the hell will I carry a gun other than in the car? I see "no guns" signs everywhere. Can't carry into places where alcohol is served, can't carry at work, or at gym, bunch of business with "no-guns" signs, etc.

I open carry in the woods and that's it.
