Do you hold these matches very regularly? I'm in the process of moving so may not make it this time but would be interested in the future.

We are trying to have them monthly. Depends on space available, a qualified volunteer match director AND volunteers to help set up & tear down.
August might be iffy with so many closures of RFGC due to matches, but we'll keep posting match dates here and on the club calendar (http://rfgc.org/events/index.php as they are scheduled.

Forgive my ignorance but what all is typically involved in one of these matches? And how friendly do they tend to be for someone completely new to them?

It's like an IDPA stage, only with an evil black rifle.
This is a stage shot at dusk, but you can get the idea.

Everyone that's done one of these matches had never done it before they did it. All beginners at one point. As long as you're safe and follow instructions you're welcome to participate. Oh, and ya gotta be safe too.

Are there rules about priority of targets, tactical reloads, etc. like IDPA? I'm interested either way, just wondering.

Yes.
Fair warning, the match director is an evil dude. Your walk-thru has no targets, just shows you the route you will go. On your first run, you will then deal with engaging from cover, round placement, and reloading using cover, all on the fly. :AR15firing:

Thanks for the heads up. I've never shot a match like that, should be interesting. Haven't decided yet if I like the more defensive IDPA type matches or USPSA.

Do you folks recommend a single point or double point sling for something like this?

I ran with no sling last month. You'd be fine with either though.

Sling type is purely personal preference. I like single point on short barrel rifles, and two point on 16+ inch lengths.

No sling, at least at the ones I've been at, would be tough as there was no place to set your AR down when you transitioned to handgun. I guess you could just hold it in your off had and shoot the handgun unsupported.
