UPDATE: It looks like these classes are now rotating through several Sno-Isle library locations. If Stanwood isn't convenient, you might see if a library closer to you has added the class to its schedule. Or check the full event schedule for all Sno-Isle locations here -- https://sno-isle.libnet.info/events

-----

There will be a 2-hour class for girls 11-18 years old on self-defense at the Stanwood library on Sept. 19. Looks like it will include some hands-on skills along with tips on improving situational awareness and avoiding confrontations. Appears to be free but registration is required and as of now only 15 seats remain.

I have no affiliation, just saw a notice about it somewhere. If you have a young girl in your clan, this might be a good chance to boost her ability (and confidence) to handle scary situations without having her ignore you while you try to teach her yourself.

Girls only, 11-18 years old only.

While some training is better than none, I do get concerned that a student will think they can protect themselves after a one day class. That is very unlikely.

Hopefully the students will complete this class and then go on to get 3-4 years of practical self defense training, including sparring with others. Like most things, there are no shortcuts.

Having said that, I hope lots of people attend your class, and gain an enduring interest in unarmed self defense

This isn't my class. I have nothing to do with it. I don't teach anything to anyone. I don't even go to the Stanwood library. I saw the notice for it posted online and shared it in case a member here was interested in it for their own daughter/niece/whatever.

This smells like bullshit....

But the class sounds awesome. Thanks for posting!

Great posting this! :thumbsup2:

While quality and quantity is always subjective, almost any exposure to the reality of potential threats, and the need for some aspect of self-reliance is good.

Hopefully the instructor, or assistants, have avenues for additional learning, and...the participants, or parents, will see their own need for additional instruction.

Knowledge is power.

Bumping (and OP updated) because other Sno-Isle library locations are also starting to host this class.

Anything that promotes situational awareness and gets kid's heads out of a screen and on a swivel is worth trying, IMO.
