How can one judge how old reloading powder is, I have 7 1lb containers in various stages of use from full to almost empty that were given to me, the containers are all plastic accurate brand. |

Well, you can ballpark it from the label or container design, most likely . . . but really, the answer is "it doesn't matter." If the powder smells good and looks good, then you should be able to use it. |

All of mine looks like this: So I'm guessing that yours is older . . . but how old, I have no idea. |

If all of the powders smell and look good, mix all of the same powder into one LOT and start reloading.... |

You guys are ASSUMING that the powders are the same number. I would smell it and take a small amount from each bottle and flash it outside. If one did not flash good then that would go in my crap powder bottle. My crap powder bottle is not crap but a mix of amounts that were to small to load a cartridge and i did not have any more. One of these days I will use that bottle for stump removal. I have used powder that smelled good that was in cardboard containers. |

I was under the impression you never mix powders from different lot numbers. I have reloaded .223 using 40+ year old powder, the only thing i noticed when firing was it had a different smell than newer powder of the same type. YMMV |

YMMV When I run into the situation where I have to purchase multiple 1lb containers of a powder of different lots, I mix them together in order to minimize any small variations between the lots. Never an issue when done properly. |

Not to hijack the thread, but how do you tell if a powder "smells bad"? |
