Awhile back my Dad sent me a brand new Dillon RL-550 reloading press and I'd like to try some reloading. Well Christmas I here and I'd like to get some dies for it for reloading 300BLK. Unfortunately there seem to be a ton of options and I don't know much about reloading beyond what I've seen on youtube. Does anyone have any recommendations for dies for this press?

What do you have for brass will make a big difference on the dies you use. I form 300BO from milsurp brass. I use a Lee die set and I had to weld the decapping pin in place to be able to form the cases. You will also need a military crimp remover.

Dillon dies are great.
I'm using RCBS dies with my Dillon 650XL for 300BO with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
I recommend using Dillon locking rings with other brand dies on a Dillon machine.

Some calibers I like to mix it up. Dillon decaping, Redding seater, Lee crimp die.

Generally speaking, any brand of dies will do the job.

I'm a Hornady whore, but I especially like their dies because of the floating sleeve on the seating die which some other brands don't have, and for their locking rings. I buy extra Hornady locking rings for my non-Hornady dies.

Yeah, I sound like dreadi. I haven't used Dillon dies, but the Hornday locking rings are WAY better than what I have on my Lee and RCBS dies.

So what is the proccess of reforming 223/5.56 brass in to 300 Blackout?
Do you trim the brass first, or reform it first?
How or what do you trim it with?

Do you just use the 300 Blackout resizer or is there another step?

Also I'd asume it would need fire forming.

It is worth resizing the brass compared to just buying once fired 300 Blackout brass?

Cut down with a squirrel daddy jig and harbor freight 2" cutoff saw.

300 blackout resizing die, then final trim.

No.

If you are using free pickup 223, then maybe. I think you are retired so you may have more time than some.

The only reason I do it is for nickle plated hunting loads. Got all my plinking stuff from Wes Sage.

I used to make my own, then I found sages reloading supply. His cost and quality make processing your own obsolete.

Agreed with the two above. I used to have the setup and make my own, then decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. If I need more now, I buy it.

With that said, you can set up the Dillon trimmer (the 1500 I think?) to do it pretty fast and easy now. Damned new technology.

First I de prime using a universal deprimer then I de swage using a RCBS de swaging tool thenI run it through the Lee sizing die with plenty of lube. Yes necks will split but most of the time that part of the neck you will be cutting off any way. Once I have the case formed I shorten it by using my Forstner Case cutter that I have an adaptor on r and eletrick drill. Lastly I tpouch up the casemouth and primer pocket on mt RCBS case prep station. Yes I could purchase processed brass from Wes BUT since I also load 5.56 and 6x45 I watch when I am loading these calibers for cases with mouth problems.

I think a Dillon guy needs to help you out here. I am primarily Lee with my presses and dies but have owned a Dillon 1050 a few years ago. When I had the Dillon I had issues with the short body of the Lee dies. I'm not sure if the same issue would happen on the RL-550.
