Hi all,

anyone have direct experience reloading 9mm with Small Pistol Magnum Primers instead of the standard Small Pistol Primers?

My current recipe is as follows: Xtreme 9mm (124gr HP), 5.0gr of W231, Winchester standard Small Pistol Primers.

I screwed up and accidentally purchased a large amount of Small Pistol Magnum Primers-- what I've found in my research has ranged from "it runs a little hotter, but SHOULD BE OK if you dial back the charge" TO "don't screw around with it... not recommended at all."

I can't ship it back to powder valley, so before I go the path of trying to sell it/trade, I was wondering if there's anyone with first-hand experience with this, what the considerations are, and ultimately, if it's ok, or if i'm subjecting myself to unnecessary risk.

Note that i'm not looking for hypotheticals or statements like "it should work", but for folks who have actually tested it.

Thanks in advance!

I've done it for AR15 9MM. Back off 20% on your powder and slowly work it up

Or swap it for standard primers

I've done it, no issues. As stated above you'll want to work your load up again.

I have done it for .38s and 9mm makes no difference.

I've used CCI550 (small pistol magnum) primers for 9mm with 115-grain bullets and W231. No issues.

I'd back off the powder charge a bit and do some test loads, but I think you'll be fine.

And P.S., I was in that situation for the very same reason.
