Some time ago I picked up what I thought was a box of primed .45-70 brass for reloading. After I got it home, I discovered that it is really short! The case length is only 1.635". I've spent enough time trying to Google what the heck I've got here. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Are they Hornady head stamp by any chance? If so they are designed for the Leverlution bullets, pointed bullets with rubber tips

and welcome to WaGuns!

That's odd, because even the hornady ftx asks for 2.040 case length.

Welcome to WaGuns. At first I thought you might have some .454 Casull, but they're too long, and your length falls in between a .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11_mm_caliber).

Some pictures with calipers would help identify it, but it sounds like you've got an odd bird. Are the cases rimmed? Obviously they're straight walled if you thought they were for 45-70 Govt. Rim diameter, mouth diameter, etc. would all be helpful. There are a lot of guys on here FAR more knowledgeable about reloading than me. We'll eventually get it figured out for you.

My bad! I should have included more info. These are Remington Peters (R-P) .45-70 head stamped brass. Case length is 1.635". Case diameter is .495" just above the rim, and .480" at the case mouth. Rim diameter is .595".

My Lee reloading book says the case dia. above the rim should be .504", and the rim dia. should be .608" for a standard .45-70 cartridge.

Its gotta be for either some long lost historic round recreated or maybe someone was playing around with making a wildcat?

Could be for blanks, line throwing charges, or an industrial hole punch ( used for making holes in railroad tracks)

I recall Navy 45-70 line throwing charges (and chambers) were shorter to prevent firing live ammo.

Guntrader, thanks for the heads-up on the rail punch. My 9-5 is inspecting and working on railroad track, so your post is very appropriate! I had not see that product before.

As stated in a previous post, I, too, think that someone was making some sort of wildcat cartridge. I'm thinking of making some blanks out of these rounds just for fun.

Thanks everyone for your responses, and Merry Christmas!
