I tried some small magnum primers on 9mm awhile back and saw a ~50fps increase in the chrono. This video is great.

Take note that he only tested one specific charge of one specific powder, and who knows what brand of each type primer. What happens if you change the charge? What happens with other powders? What happens with other brands of primer? Experiment away, but be safe about it. Start low and work up.

Agreed. And he didn’t do enough rounds for any real statistical accuracy. The first round with the standard primer that hit 37000+ psi was odd, and I didn’t like that he blew it off.

Still, I liked the video. But it’s certainly not the be-all end-all answer to the discussion. I agree, experiment carefully.

I have a set of S&B primers that say you can use them for small pistol or small rifle

He makes points that backed up by his own research, good video... It seems as always, it is up to each of us as reloaders to work our way up and find out what works in our guns.
I am newer to reloading than most people here and small pistol primers were already getting scarce when I started last spring. I stocked-up on small rifle primers because they were available and there are lots of people who use them for 9mm and can serve dual purpose in many rifles (I have not yet used them).
I just started reloading .45acp and the brass I have is designed for large primers. While large pistol primers are less expensive and easier to find than small pistol, I recently bought some large pistol magnum primers at pre-covid price to load into the .45acp. I will start low and work up... While I would prefer to simply purchase the ideal choice of primer for each application, the shortage is forcing different choices.
