I came up on a good deal for 8 pounds of W296, from a friend at work. I know I can use it in my 44 and 357 mag. But doing some research, the minimum starting load for a 200 grain HP is 27.3 grains in all my references. Both online and in print. Anyone ever use this powder in 44 and 357 mag?

Yep but with 240 grain lead and 140 grain zinc. 22.5 grains for the lead and 23.5 for the zinc. You have to use 296 at almost full case because it will give you pressure spikes if you do not.

Not much help but I once loaded a ladder test for .357 with 158g HP’s and W296, I didn’t make it to half strength due to excessive recoil. I switched to Bullseye for 38/357.
I only use W296 for 300BLK nowadays.

I've read this and am a little concerned about it.

If you are loading with 296 and it has much of an air pocket it will give you trouble. I used to use 296 for .44 Special but it only worked with virgin cases and 20 some grains so I quit and just use 296 for my magnums.
