I typically reload a 9mm handgun using small pistol primers. Are there safety concerns using magnum primers instead? I’ve read magnum ignites faster and they are harder on the firing pin. I use Accurate #5 powder. Should I avoid using? If so, what are they typically used for?

Many people have used magnum primers for 9mm; I've done it a little myself, but not much.

I suspect that you could just use your existing load data as long as you're not right at the top, pressure-wise. Personally though, I'd make some test loads at lower charges and work your way up, just to be sure.

Depends on your gun (some hit primers harder than others), but generally you'll be fine.

Only Glocks here, but we've run thousands of magnum small pistol through all of them with no issues whatsoever. Never changed loads either, and some are rather hot. If you run max loads or are unsure, by all means work up.

Fun fact: you can also use small rifle (same stipulations as above), have run thousands through our Glocks, no issues.

Small rifle magnum though is a NO-GO, cups are too thick, can produce light strikes/fail to fire.

Always good to know during times of limited availability.

When I'm looking for pistol primers, I'm happy with small pistol, small pistol magnum, or small rifle.

My 2 cents based on my own experience.
