A common problem with progressive reloaders is the shellplate snapping as it indexes.

Some cartridges are notorious for spilling powder out of the cases as the shellplate snaps (e.g. 9mm). Or if you have charges that significantly fill the case.

Fortunately, there is an easy fix. thumbsup

tap the shellplate ball carriers with a punch until they are nearly flush with the plate.

don't worry if you tap it too far, you can always tap it back into position from the top side.

Hmm, interesting.

So you're not tapping on the ball itself . . . just the part that holds it?

Good idea.. I saw some fella has a video in YouTube, where he used a dremal and cut a little channel on the press where the balls sit into so the balls don't snap into place, but smoothly slide into the hole...Like your idea better

Caution, you don't want to go too low or you won't have proper location of the shell plate. Just low enough so the ball still makes full contact with the hole in the shell plate. If you tap it down too far you will have "slop" in the plate's rotation when it's supposed to be held in a specific position. Too much slop and you start bending or breaking de-priming pins.

thanks usagi nice trick... most of my reloading on the LnL AP is 38 Special which, as a former blackpowder cartridge, has way more case volume than is occupied by reasonable charges of smokeless propellant... 9mm is another story as you mentioned... i'll take a look at this next time i crank out a batch of 9mm.. thanks

This really works. I load 9mm with AA2, I always used to get powder sloshing out of the case on indexing, even trying to go slow (WHAT A WASTE ON A PROGRESSIVE!) a quick tap and now it indexes nice and smooth and no more mess...

Thanks for sharing this tip! I will have to try it on my 9mm shell plate.

Two things that worked for me:
1) Put my finger on the case as it comes around. Doesn't slow me down at all.
2) Tighten the shell plate until it doesn't move and just loosen until it move around smoothly.
Whatever works for you.

I tried and it's not working for me. Either it snaps or if the ball bearing is pushed too far or it doesn't index properly. Still it seemed to reduce spillage 99% and depends on the powder, with Titegroup flake powder it pretty much eliminated but Clean Shot is very fine like H110, I still use finger to prevent jump. And whoever said it doesn't slow you down it's not true, I could be grabbing next case but instead I am waiting for rotation to complete, unless you have case feeder. I am thinking of drilling shell plate and putting some kind of spring loaded "brake" to drag at the bottom. Also I don't understand the comment above about tightening shell plate until it moves. That has no effect for me no matter how I tighten, it rotates freely as it should be.

Different shell plates fit differently on my press. With some of them, I can tighten them down all the way and they still move freely, as you said. With other shell plates, if I tighten them too far (sometimes anything more than finger tight), it creates drag. So, I can see that the solution above would help with some shell plates, but not others.

Just found this thread again and decide to update it for anyone who might find it useful in the future. What I ended up doing is taking the bottom piece off press off and creating a tear drop shape cut outs where you normally have a round indent with a dremel tool and a grinding bit used for nails that my sister in law gave me, it didn't fit her tool. It worked great on steel and didn't take long. I was nervous because if I messed up that meant I have to buy a new part but it turned out well and after this fix I could run a 9mm case double charged and it wouldn't spill a single grain of powder. I ran thousands and thousands of reloads and this was by far the best mod I've done for the press. The 2nd best thing was to get 3D printed case feeder.

Right now the press is retired and I switched to Dillon RL1100

......

Huh, Ive been placing a finger over the shell when the plate moves/rotates forward...

I like to see inside each shell .....hate the squib and need every grain to make Power Factor.

Maybe Ill try this.
