I taper crimped my .45acp. My 45 long colt needs a roll crimp. How much? Do you measure it? Just eyeball it? I can't seem to find specs anywhere. My reloading manual doesn't specify, neither do the dies.

Personally I eyeball it, and make sure they load smoothly into the cylinder.

I roll crimp all my pistol calibers including semi auto. Rimmed cartridges are easy.

Right...but since he couldn't find a "Spec" for the roll crimp, that's where his issue comes into play.

You know it's easy, i know it's easy, he doesn't know it's easy and he's hung up on a having some sort of measurement or spec for it.

Hence why i suggested he Google it and watch some video's and see for himself it's simple and easy.

:thumbsup2:

This... Then when at the range, I load the cylinder , fire off a couple rounds, then check a couple others remaining in cylinder for signs of extension or set-back- This is especially true when loading rounds for my .45colt lever gun...lever a round or 2 out and check the oal

I loaded up 13, shot 1, shot 2, shot 10. Loaded up 100 when I came home. I'll take the calipers next time I head out and check the ones in the tube.

I load my 45 Colt light, think cowboy competition shooting.
I've found that the 45 Colt with a large case and not dropping a lot of powder in it likes a good hard crimp.
Thhhaattt being said, I don't use jacketed or plated bullets, hard cast only.
I don't trim the brass, any pistol brass, never have in 41 years, although on occasion will get bored and sort through thousands of pieces of 45 auto brass for ones that have been fired so many times they are more than long, but that only happens every few years.
Over the years I've gotten a pretty accurate feel how much crimp I'm getting on a single stage, regardless of length of brass. I'd never try it on my Dillon.
I'm not out for moa accuracy on a 45LC, if it's a longer than specs a bit, ain't hurting a thing.
Read, watch and learn. More importantly, practice and get a feel by what is to much or too little.
To little crimp, primer launches round into barrel and burns half the powder leaving round stuck, or dropping 10' in front of you, to much crimp and bullet goes out just fine but more wear on brass, way too much and you turn the round into an accordion.
Just perfect by way of practice, you hit the mark.

I'm using plated bullets. I'll keep in mind the details you spelled out. Thanks for the info. I'm also not putting a lot of powder in, they are pretty light loads. Same amount of powder i put in my 45ACP actually. The manuals said this was the starting load for cowboy loads, and now I don't have to adjust the powder thrower.
