Look through this thread, info's been posted on programming them. Not hard to do from the front face, even easier (and less tedious) with chirp on a computer.

You're in Snohomish county, I bet you could hit the HJR repeater on E. Tiger Mtn. which had amazing coverage.

Get your Tech license yet? Easy, also been posted about in this thread. I became a ham in this thread.

WAYYY too expensive.

Also, since adoption of the XTS5K was... pretty lame.. to say the least... I'm gonna have to change my suggestion to Anytone 878, which supports AES-256 out of the box...in addition to thinks like APRS, which can be used for tracking other users in a group (when set up properly).... and while it won't monitor police agencies like WSP, it's a lot better all around radio, AND is dual band, capable of transmitting on ham, MURS, and FRS. Something the XTS can't do.

Holy fuck! Do you have to read the WHOLE Federal register or all 500 sections of title 47 of the CFR to find out where/how to apply for the GMRS license?

"Here's the link to Chapter 47. Information about the license is in Section 95 subsection E"

I'm pretty sure all it says there is "yup, you needa git a license, bwoy".

You have any helpful links and suggestions?

Hang on, GMRS is a certain "code" of license, all of 'em are. Lemme look.

ETA: go here, and register an FRN and password with them, go from there:

https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp

Once registered, log in and apply for license code ZA, that's GMRS.

Yeah, GMRS is easy. Get FRN then GMRS is just pay the fee and wait a few days (or 9) then you get a confirmation email and can go check your call sign.

Downloading a pdf of your license is still FUBAR but you only need to see your call sign on the FCC site and GTG.

Reminder…

If you get an FCC license, someone can look up your call sign, and see the address it was mailed to.

For some, it’s worth renting a box somewhere for that…
