The memorization technique has and is serving me well, plus I'm a good at guessing. But much like movingviolation, I have some desire to actually understand some of the he material. The electric diagrams aren't new to me as I have to pull those out from time to time on the ship, on the ship though I'm dealing with drawings from all over the world dating back 1972-present. So "standard" isn't a thing where I come from...

Put it on there for just a second.... let it sit for 5 or 10 seconds... pulse it for another second... Repeat that a couple times... Just be aware if there's a dead short, it can weld the contacts, so you need some way to disconnect it...
But again, that's JUST to get it back... if it's that gone, even if you bring it back you probably lost half your capacity anyway, just like a car battery.
What happens is, the internal voltage drops below something the charger will recognize, so the charger says 'uhh...no... I'm not charging that'....... Boosting the pack with high amps at higher volts can help redistribute the electrolyte.

well i'll be dipped... it worked for the dead dead battery, it's now showing "charging" when i put it back in the charger. the one that was alive is still flashing red and green lights at the same time, no change. i'll try to hold it for a couple of seconds longer on the 12v...

Yup.
Amateur radio is like opening the flood gates to geeky shit.
You wanna be able to operate off grid? Well, you need to know about wiring, batteries, chemistry, etc.
:D
Not kidding either. You learn a ton of shit, and you basically turn into McGyver... Being able to understand how/why shit works, and fixing shit on the fly, if need be.
Circuit design, soldering, RF principles, electronics/electrical, sunspot cycles, understanding the different layers of the atmosphere and how they impact your signal and things like ducting.. Satellites, whether through an AO or EME..
You can make it as simple or as amazingly difficult as you want. It wasn't unheard of for people to make a QRP (low power) radio, simple circuit design, into an altoids tin, powered by a 9V battery, go hiking, string a longwire antenna in a tree, and talk to Italy, from an altoids tin, in the Appalachian mountains....

the one that was dead dead is now showing fully charged (or green light) on the charger, after sitting there for about 15-20 minutes. how could that be?

Because it can't take a full charge. It's toast. You can put it on the radio and let the radio kill it, then charge it again, and do that a couple times and you might regain a little capacity, but it's basically toast. Like I said, it's a trick to get a couple more uses out of them, at best..
