I'm really looking forward to my chance to meet him and chew the fat, and coerce him into programming mine! Until then I'm trying to learn what I can on the internet, it's alot to take in.
I've been playing around on the ship here, but there isn't a whole lot to listen to that isn't scrambled (voice inversion). Seems these fisherman want to keep all the shitty fishing a secret! I also suspect there's some traffic on the 2m band I'm not able to grab. Antenna setup is not ideal trying to listen from my stateroom window... Mostly get some marine VHF that's often scrambled, and of course I've figured out what frequency the bridge is talking to the deck on. Bought a hackrf with a portapack, that's been cool to play with it has an app for grabbing AIS signals and translating....

Just want to give props to TW for taking the time to share this information with the group. Thanks!

Nice.
So my JT1000 works, but only one battery. My new chinese 'extra Mh' battery is totally dead. Maybe it could be repaired.
But might have to get a replacement for it. Hopefully I can do a HAM test soon.

It's the same series(Astro25). Same capabilities, but much less of a radio. Smaller batteries, less durable. Crypto modules are harder to find, more expensive, and limited to 1 algo.

I’m a little leery of some aspects of it, I think someone replaced the body, but it was a trade for stuff I didn’t need.

It looks brand new until you look under the battery. If I can make this work I'd like to, but I'm not against getting a xts5000 as well if it keeps us all standardized.

This is an awesome thread. Thank you TW for suggesting it. I have been interested in this for a long time. Wondering if there is another source for these radios than Ebay. (seem to be popular right now) Or should I just bite at 500$.
