NBC rated, and you need some. That reminds me, i need to get some new Filters. They don't store forever.

Decide what you want protection from. If you’re worrying about a actual nuclear/biological/chemical environment you’re going to need a lot more than just a mask. If you’re just worried about riot agents then just about any mask with a decent filter will do. An expired NBC filter will still easily protect from riot control agents.

Not that I would ever encourage such a thing, but the M50 masks that you can find on EBay are some of the better masks you can get right now for the money. Getting replacement filters may be a pain, but if you just want something for riot type stuff they should serve you very well.

Good point about the NBC, if you don't have a suit it really doesn't matter if you just have the Mask.

Not just a suit, you’d need detection equipment and heavy decontamination setup. Plus once stuff has been exposed it has to be discarded and replaced. So you’d need multiple suits, gloves, boots and filters. Not really feasible unless you’ve got a Gov budget.

I wish this could be plastered across every prepper website and junk-sales platform there is.

Plus, contaminated stuff doesn’t just have to be ‘discarded’, but discarded safely...

This will do just about anything you need for the short term. Medium fits most folks, but if you can find someone that has different mask sizes for you to try on before hand I’d recommend that first.

First, I would only go for Western gear (not Warsaw pact or Chinese).

M17 would be good with filters properly stored, although they would be old. Other disadvantage is the inability to change while wearing a mask. There are different variations to include mouth to mouth resuscitation (A1 version) (doesn't work), and drinking from a canteen (A2) (works ok) with an NBC cap.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M17_gas_mask

M40 was a marked improvement with this ability, with the capability to use NATO standard screw in filters.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M40_field_protective_mask

Don't know about the M50 although I think it would be an improvement over the M40.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M50_joint ... rpose_mask

As you can see, these are categorized as "protective masks" not "gas" masks, which is a misnomer, since they would not protect you in an oxygen starved area or one with carbon monoxide.

You would still exhale your breath in this contaminated environment given the usage of the flutter valves for exhaling.

There are various means for detection to include: observation, M9 paper, chemical alarms, etc.
https://www.armystudyguide.com/content/ ... us-2.shtml

They're all sized items, and for your head, the use of calipers are used to assist in determining your face size or just try them on and find one that give you a good seal, although you would be getting your koodies on other gear people could be wearing.

We would often use banana oil to see if you have a good seal.

Protective suit, e.g. gloves, boots, covering is needed for skin protection, if there is a corrosive, reactive, or agent that contacts the skin and causes harm to include nerve agents (and probably other agents).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerve_agent
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOPP_(protective_gear)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_weapon

If you wear glasses, you need an insert with special spectacles to fit.

What is the risk?

Tear gas by and large is the major usage so far in this country. Mark Koernke always reminds listeners, "How long can you hold your breath?"

If the Chinese ever gave MS-13 chemical weapons, it would be interesting. However, usage can vary based on weather conditions, method on employment, operational setting (rural, downtown).

I would say the risk is low, unless you are in an urban setting, especially Seattle, where tear gas and the like can be deployed.

Big topic, didn't even scratch the surface, and I was never an NBC series specialty (I did go to NBC Defense). Decontamination is another area which is messy, continued operations, disposal.

Great info! Mostly I’m concerned about riot agents. Not sure about other chemical agents, but in a nuke scenario, Just not sure much can be done on a personal level unless it’s to suit up for evacuation. So the suiting up point is well taken.

So I’m looking at this mask. I’m guessing the NBC77 canisters are for nuclear/bio agents and are something I could potentially buy later?

Is this correct? Other concerns or issues?

School me.

Which mask?

Canisters are a durable/expendable item and can be purchased later.

Canisters when you lightly shake them should not have loose debris.

Stored properly they are good for years.

your listing or image of mask did not come through so we don't know which mask you're referring to.
