Post subject:  Anybody storing Gas?
Is anybody storing gas at home in a way that is not too scary? I'm thinking of a couple of gallons that could take me out of town and into wilderness if the urban scenario becomes hostile.

Yes, I store 20 gallons in 5 gallon cans. I cycle them from left to right. The left can gets used first, when it is empty I slide them all over and put the new full one on the right. A good rule of thumb is to only put ethanol free in gas cans. If you own anything that gets filled off cans or does not get driven much, ethanol free will give you less problems. If you don't have lawnmowers, chainsaws or quads that allow you to cycle through all 20 gallons in a year, set a reminder to fill your car with them once a year and restock with fresh gas. Once it becomes habit, you won't really have to thing about it. Also always keep your car about a half a tank, this is also a good habit so you will never be stranded. Ethanol free can be found at the airport or some reservations or casinos.

Put in stabilizer before and after. I do this for my power equipment. Rotate.

I store gas until it's bed time. When the sheets are pulled back the Kracken is unleashed. All those that want to intrude into my fortress of comfort and heat die a slow death.

I have about 25gal at home in plastic cans. I use STA-BIL. Typically rotate every six months en masse by fueling my 29gal truck tank when it's nearly empty.

I'm more concerned about a generator. Eventually I'd love to have a 500gal in-ground tank. No matter what, in a big SHTF scenario you'll eventually run out, it's just how long do you want to last?

Bugging out "into the woods" is 100% fatal without decades of skills and lots of specific tools. We've romanticized "mountain men" but there is a reason they're not a thing in the 21st century.

I don't really have to worry. I always have about 4 one and two gallon cans of ethanol free super for the saws, and a 100 gallon transfer for the mills and such. I have another 100 gallon transfer for diesel for the backhoe and excavators and tractors and trucks. Plus I try to keep everything on full if possible.

You dont want my fuel bill, trust me! And Im dumb enough to two big block trucks and a big block boat!

I honestly have never used a fuel stabilizer. My boat runs great on last years fuel. My rigs always ran fine on anything that smelled better than laquer.

I used to get 55 gallon drums of fuel from the wrecking yard and never had a problem. Ran it for years till these new "hazardous waste" regs started cracking down on the yards.

Run it through a 5 or 10 micron filter and hold her to the floor!

The key is to keep tanks FULL so you don't combat moisture/condensation and rust.

Everyone here drives a car full of gas. Fill 2 five gallon cans and pour one in your car at the end of each month, then refill it. You will always have an extra ten gallons on hand that not more than a month or two old.


I will add, Utah has the worth fuel in the world. after driving thru there a couple years ago, they have 4 grades of fuel and the best one still smelled worse than old auction car gas. The shit made no power and stunk and mileage was crappy. Id take 2 year old PNW fuel over that garbage they distill in the stank of Salt Lake.

I have a generator that when things go bad I use for power. I keep (5) 5 gallons cans that I fill with Stabile every October. When I don't use them I pour them in my truck during the summer so I can get some fresh stuff in October. Funny thing, when I got my generator I also got one for my parents. I had to start in for them on Sunday and the gas in the tank was 2 years old with stabile. I hit the air filter with a shot of starter fluid and it fired and ran on the 2nd pull after sitting for TWO years. Gas stores well and if you use non ethanol gas (that costs well north of $4 a gallon) and stores even longer if you use Stabile.

I have two tanks at the cabin. One is a 20 plus gallon aluminum RV watertank and the other is a 20 plus gallon boiler tank from a hot water heat system. I lucked out as a neighbor had just upgraded his coal fired home heat system just a year before he sold the house and the new owners did not want to deal with it. I poured sand in the bottom to make a good water trap. Every ten years or so I drain the tank and use it in my vehicles and replace it. After ten plus years sealed with staybil the fuel was just as good as when I put it in the tank. I use the staybiled fuel in the aluminum tank as needed during hunting and fishing season since my closest station is 30 miles away.
