Oh, I forgot to mention, I saw a WA state plated HMMWV (a soft top 4 door) on the road the other day. This was always the buggaboo of military HMMWVs --- getting them street legal.

They are not the perfect bug out rig, but they are simple and tough. 24V creates some issues but not insurmountable.

Surplus Army trucks. Carry a ton and EMP proof. I can only wish to own one. My Step Dad's Brother a prepper and lone wolf ex military militia man owns one.

Few years ago I was seriously thinking about getting one of surplus BRDM2.
wikipedia link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRDM-2
Pros in a nutshell:
- bulletproof (AK rifles at least)
- can use internal air-oxygen tanks for crews( in case of chemical attack)
- can swim for extended periods of time if needed.
- can switch from 4x4 to 8x8 (two additional wheels on each side with hydraulics)

I don’t know how ‘seriously’ you were thinking about it, but with only 20 in the U.S., good luck.

If that's your idea of a bug out vehicle I've got an E350 with a 7.3L IDI that I'll make you deal on

I see it as practical for those with less money. Although it does not come with 4x4 capability unless you add it somehow. However it's very much grey man.

When I was laid off a few years back, I found a job around Portland and a friend had a cheap place at a building downtown. You rent a cube, shower inside but sleep in your vehicle. The only vehicle I could regularly sleep in would either be a Suburban (or similar) or a full sized van like this which would provide much more room.
