We're planning a bunch of new raised beds, and if I could be 100% certain that the plastics wouldn't leach estrogen mimicking chemicals I'd build them with the plastic boards for longevity.
Alas.
So mine will be made of good wood, and I'll just plan on replacing them every 5 years or so.

Side jaunt on plastic vs wood... Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I’m about to redo my 600sf deck using TimberTek and it’s only about $4k in materials. I’ll be doing the work myself.

That price is tempting. I'll have to check them out. Looks like we might be redoing our deck (top decking only) this summer.

My deck is a second story and requires a full replacement. I priced out all of the materials from both Dunn and Lowe’s.

The materials costs run between 8-10K. The permit for the city is 500-1K

I want 20' sticks. :wink05:

Also need to do quite a bit of structure work. That 4k price I put on was for everything I wanted to do (picture frame, some benches, firebowl area, sono tubes for future covered area etc).

You need a 500-1000 dollar Permit to simply replace an existing deck with the same design/Layout? icon_eek

The only folks who "need" that permit, is the leaches in county govt.

That way they know RIGHT AWAY to reassess your property value since you upgraded that old decks quality!

Probably true but it comes back to bite you when you sell the house.

Plastic decks!! I chuckle!

couple of things:

Go to Dunn lumber or other places where they have decks or segments installed in the showroom. They depict tightly mitered corners and end seams. Yet the manufacturers state that at least 1/4" gap at the ends must be maintained to allow for thermal expansion. So those tight butts they show in the environmentally controlled showroom aren't achievable in the real world AND,

When installing the plastic decking, is that gap set in the morning when the decking is cold, or midafternoon after it has warmed up? Presumably it isn't ALL being cut and set in the same hour, if the deck has any size or complexity.

The neighbor has a plastic deck erected when those products were first introduced. The thermal expansion is around 3/4"!! It has torn itself apart and cracked at the fasteners, interestingly, on all the vertically installed pieces (fascia, stair risers). In the winter his mitered joints and fascia corners are tight. By mid spring there are finger sized gaps at the corners.

He hired me to do some remediation on it and I cut oversized oval holes for every fastener (and used washers) to provide for this expansion.

If all else fails, read the directions.

If any of you guys want me to check pricing through my lumber yard (Evergreen in Port Orchard) I'd be happy to

They mostly sell Timbertech
