I have been reloading 30 years I crimp everthing yes even 9mm and .40 cal with a roll crimp. I get more consistant ammunition because with the crimp my cartridges develop a consistant pressure each and every time.

I find this strange, as I learned years ago, from multiple published sources, as well as knowledgeable individuals, never to roll crimp cartridges such as 9x19mm, .40, .45ACP, 10mm, etc., as they all headspace off the case mouth.

The edge of the case should be firmly contacting the headspace ledge at the front end of the chamber.

Technically, the only amount of crimp that should be given to so-called "straight-walled" pistol cartridges (yes. 9x19mm is technically tapered, but in that category) is just enough to remove the belling from the expansion die.

After loading some un crimped rounds I loaded a magazine and manually fed my rifle. I then measures and found noticable setback had occurred. I've crimped my .223 since.

To ensure proper neck tension of at least 0.002" I measure the OD of a sized but not seated case then subtract the OD of a loaded case. I also tend to use the same headstamp for a batch for consistency as case thickness can vary.

When I do crimp I prefer the Lee factory crimp die.

I sort by head stamp and use 0.002" or 0.003" of neck tension, depending on the bullet I'm seating. Found I need more neck tension with SMK 77s, assuming because they have more inertia when they chamber and the tension is stopping more weight from carrying forwards into the throat.

I agree on the Lee FCD when I am crimping something.

If it's going in an semi-auto, I crimp.
