(As are the guns, of course.) Well, compared to getting them in the studio where I can control the light a bit. And use a “real” camera. Although I’ve been pretty impressed with the camera on the iPhone. For what it is, it’s not bad! Bill R

Well...these were originally made for BP. So, here's what I have so far...
.45-120 Sharps, made by C. Sharps of Montana. 30" heavy octagon barrel, long range sight with spirit level front, double-set trigger.
My favorite load thus far uses the bullet shown: 500 grain Lyman spire point, on 115 grains of Goex 1F, or Swiss 1.5F powder; compressed .4 inch; one .030 overpowder wad; SPG grease cookie and another .030 sealer wad. The bullet has two lube grooves as well, full length sized with a firm roll crimp. Enjoy!

Haven’t even got the chance to shoot either the Aston or the Walker. Bill R Excuse me, sir, but I have to ask... Is that a real Walker Colt?

It makes VERY loud booms, spits fire and clouds of smoke, and is a BLAST to shoot! Unfortunately, I'm still trying to find the sweet spot for it...so far, 113-115 grains seems to be in the right neighborhood.

MadPick wrote: Sinus211 wrote: I have 0 interest in bp guns Well, let me see if I can reinforce that opinion. I bought a 3-pack of black powder guns today for $300. Yeah, that's cheap, but these all need some help so there will be elbow grease involved before I get them shooting. First up, an Armi San Marco version of the 1847 Walker (that's the big mofo) and a Pietta version of the 1860 Army. Both of these are .44 caliber: There's only one nipple between the two of them , and obviously there's a lot of finish wear and some surface rust. The bores and cylinders look good except for some patches of surface rust. Then there's the Navy Arms repro of an 1863 Zouave, which is .58 caliber: This was made in 1960 per the receiver stamp. I think all of these will be just fine after some scrubbing, cold bluing, etc. Oh, and some nipples of course. But they sure are ugly at the moment! Well, I started working on that Zouave a while ago . . . I got it all apart, did a little work and then it stalled. Gun pieces all over my gun table, it kept me from doing other work, blah blah blah. I finally got it finished up today, though, and it feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders! The pic kind of sucks, but it's the top one, joined by its two brothers below: The nipple was rusted/frozen into place; it took quite a lot of work to get it out, and I replaced it. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed the barrel, getting a shit-ton of rust out. It actually looks quite good now, except for one area a few inches down that has some corroded spots. I think it will shoot just fine. I sanded a bunch of rust off the outside of the barrel and cold-blued it. Nobody is going to mistake it for Casey's work, even during his early days , but it looks a lot better than it did. I stripped the finish off the stock, stained it and put maybe 8 coats of tung oil on it. I polished up the brass the best I could, though some of the areas will never be perfect. I also sanded and cold-blued some of the steel parts like the trigger and sling hangers. Bottom line . . . I think it's functional, and it doesn't look bad. Good enough.

I took that fixed-up Zouave to the range today, and nothing blew up! Well, the hammer did pop back to half-cock with one shot, which sent little burning thingies out onto my hands . . . but meh, that's the cost of doing business, right?! I put about 20 minie balls through it, both 475- and 510-grain versions. I tried both 50 and 60 grain charges of FFg powder. It shot just about like most of my black powder guns. Here's a typical target at 50 yards. (Ignore the little wussy holes.) Recoil didn't seem too bad . . . but as I was driving home, i felt my shoulder start to ache.
