Recently just started my first foray into the NFA world with three suppressor purchases.
- Rugged Obsidian 9 stamp cashed mid April this year
- Q El Camino stamp cashed mid April this year
- TacSol Axiom stamp cashed mid October this year

So currently in the long waiting game for ATF approval and release from dealer. This whole process expected to take roughly a year based on data at NFA Tracker website.

Looking to also pick up my first SMG in the near future (Sig MPX, CZ Scorpion, or similar B&T). One way to go is simply to purchase as an SBR and start the long wait.

The other option is to purchase as a pistol then apply to ATF for SBR registration. Can anyone shed some light on how this process works? What forms are involved? Does this route take as long as the Form 4 approval process for suppressors?

Thanks in advance for helping out an NFA rookie.

Buy the pistol. Submit an electronic Form 1. Once you get your approved tax stamp, you can add a stock and do whatever else you need to do to the pistol . . . errr, now an SBR.

Oh, and get it engraved too.

The Form 1 approvals are happening very quickly now . . . maybe a month-ish?

Thanks Steve for the advice. This gets me up and running for further online research. Sounds like just buying in pistol form and filing Form1 is the way to go (i.e. much faster than SBR Form 4 process).

One question about tax stamp payment. Does the ATF eForms site allow for submission of debit/credit card info to cover the tax stamp fee?

Found a cool walk through site online for the eForm process. Please note this is from 2015 prior to Rule 41F finalization but it looks to still provide pretty good data.

There seems to be a nifty section to pay the $200 tax stamp online as part of the eForm process:

My efile form1 took exactly 20min to submit and 20 days to be approved. Damn easy. (Trust, with fingerprints, photo, leo form, and responsible person form done)
