I have a 2004 Honda Civic, 5 speed manual transmission with side airbags.

The speedometer quit working, I've been trying to sort out the repair or replacement of the gauge/cluster but it seems that there are a whole lot of different clusters.

Does anybody have or know of a source to get mine repaired?

Been on ebay but can't find the correct matching part number cluster there either.

The junkyard route is my preferred method, but with so many variations of clusters I could spend a lot of time chasing the right one to ground, if I could even find one.

I have an 04 5speed civic. I just replaced the dash because the tach was dead. I dont remember any issues finding a wrecking yard replacement. I think we tossed the other one. I'll look when I get to the shop.

Well now...I'm being told that all sorts of weird shit could happen if I don't use the "correct" calibration cluster.

Maybe I'm overthinking this whole thing

Before you go buying a cluster you need to find someone with a scan tool that has a data read out.

Drive the car with data screen and see if its registering mph.

I've changed way more VSS than instrument clusters in Honda products.



VSS=vehicle speed sensor=as in think, old school speedo cable.

Its sits in the old drive spot on the transaxle...is electronic.

I've got an OBD II scan tool and there aren't any VSS codes stored or pending.

I also did a cluster needle sweep test...no movement from the speedo needle and it's sitting clear past the 140 mph mark. Not at zero...It dropped to that spot while driving.

So after reading about 2,000 different posts about similar speedometer problems the general conclusion is cluster...but I'm not ruling out the VSS, but everything seems to point to cluster.

I'm pretty sure honda simplified their civic clusters on that generation. Dx-lx-ex had the same dash with auto and manual being the obvious difference, then there was the Si dash.

That's exactly what I'm hoping. The auto and manual are different, but I'm reading about some clusters of each group having or not having side air bag programming.

My car has bags.

You could try Tacoma Speedometer. They're the only game in town these days, as far as I know. We've used them at work several times.

For used, check out www.car-part.com. Enter your VIN and answer any questions. You should be able to get the info on your specific unit.

Found exactly the cluster I needed and the problem is solved.

Turns out there are 51..yes 51... different clusters for the 2004 Civic

$65 from Minnesota and I'm speedo positive again.
