I have been to the Nautilus museum a few times and started thinking what that must have been like compared to the boat I was on.. The history that man knows.. I was lucky enough to talk to my grandfather, and later when he passed, found ALL of his orders. He was career navy. In talking to my mom, he'd disappear for 6 months, no notice, nothing more than 'I love you sweetie, I'll call you when I can, I can't tell you where I'm going or how long I'll be'.... Turns out, when you're an engineer, and you're ordered to go to White Sands, you can't tell anyone. Also turns out, my mom got a tour of the Nautilus as a small child like 3 or 4 years old, when it was still brand new, before it went under the north pole, but she was so small she didn't realize the significance of it at the time. Only later did she put 2 and 2 together and realize 'Nautilus' wasn't just a Jules Verne reference. I guess rank had its privileges. I didn't even put 2 and 2 together until after he died, and realized the connection between his assignments... as we were going through his records... Edwards , White Sands, etc and his apparent knowledge/connections to the Nautilus. He was working on missiles...Ballistic missiles... The spicy delivery kind. You'd never know. He'd never talk about it.... I met a guy who had a USS DALLAS banner in his garage... I thought it was cool as shit, because I loved The Hunt for Red October. I knew he was Navy but didn't know where he served, so, like an idiot, I asked him if he got it from Ebay, if it was part of the movie.. He just looked at me like I had 3 heads, then explained he got it from the boat he worked on.... Yup, a nice slice of humble pie for me.. and I was like a kid in a candy store just tossing questions at him left and right. I know I'd never be able to use any of the information or knowledge he imparted upon me, but it's cool as shit, talking to someone who's had those experiences and knows the equipment.
