Camping gun?

Revolver. Youre welcome.

This is a great point but there are ways to get 10mm rounds that match .357mag energy.

Having 15 rounds in a mag of a Glock20/40 or M&P 10mm @704 ft.lbs https://www.underwoodammo.com/10mm-auto ... -nose.html
is not bad at all.

.357 mag will get you a bit more @ 784 ft.lbs https://www.underwoodammo.com/357-magnu ... check.html
but 6/7 rounds and longer reload times.

Sure, you can say .357 mag barely cuts it and you meant to say .44 mag. And that would be a fair point then. That would be around @ 1189 ft.lbs https://www.underwoodammo.com/44-reming ... check.html

Brandon, you might consider the Glock 20 as well. I carry a G20SF for wilderness defense...and I spend a lot of time out in Vail (looks like you're from Rainier, so you might, too..?). In case it helps, here are some things I've learned over the years carrying and shooting this gun that might be relevant to your decision:

My OEM Glock barrel's chamber seemed to leave cartridges woefully unsupported, at least the hot factory stuff I aim to carry. Buffalo Bore 220s would eject brass that looked like guppies; big bulged bellies. I switched to a Lone Wolf barrel. Now it won't reliably chamber Buffalo Bore 220s. The big cast BB bullets seems to make the cases bulge a bit, which makes many of them like little explosive no-go gauges for the LW chamber. Underwood to the rescue! Or honestly, SIG FMJ; it's got proper 10mm power from what I can tell, and it's what I practice with at the range.

I tried a long slide and barrel. The long slide with open top allowed much debris into the gun during active woodland carry. Closed top long slides are heavier, which I didn't want. But I like the theoretical ballistic gains from a longer barrel, so...now I have a stock G20SF with an extended LW barrel poking out the front, and a muzzle nut to protect the threads. Looks goofy but it's where I ended up :thumbsup2:

Oh, and my G20SF ran .40S&W just fine the few times I've tried it, but I regard it as an emergency option because accuracy is quite poor. Headspacing off the extractor isn't great, it seems. The equivalent of freebore in this scenario is case-diameter, so it's not as workable as say, the way a revolver's bullet transitions from chamber to rifling. Plus, I assume that I'd eventually fill that gap with carbon, copper, and lead. So yeah, I thus far reject any notion that firing .40 in a Glock 10mm is dangerous (at least until I learn me some more facts), but a conversion barrel is a better approach to multi-caliber functionality.

Anyway, good luck with your purchase. A large frame 10mm auto makes all kinds of sense as a woodland carry gun, in my opinion.

OH and FWIW, I also have a G21SF in .460 Rowland, because I wanted power AND capacity  It's...scary. I don't carry it. icon_eek

I disagree - I much prefer the M&P triggers over the glock triggers.
I've only had 2 G17s but didn't love them. The 2.0 trigger isn't that bad and they are great with apex parts.
However out of the box M&P wins over glock for me.
None match a Walther PDP or PPQ though. Walther for the win.

Thanks for all the info - a G20 would be easier to carry for sure and i do understand the the open top problem. I liked the G40 because it was optic ready but maybe i'll think about getting the G20 milled.

Let’s normalize shooting deer in the neck with 10MM.

ScramblerX is this the 10mm you're looking at from s&w?

If so I would highly recommend you check around and try to get your hands on one. I had the opportunity to try the standard 2.0 curved trigger against the performance center tuned flat faced trigger in the shield plus and both were very pleasant to me but different. The flat PC trigger was so light (lightest I've ever felt) that I had a hard time finding the "wall" before the break. So I had to treat it like a double action revolver and just pull through it smoothly. The normal 2.0 curved trigger however had a defined wall and was about the same weight as the other big names I shot that day. It was however a little longer travel to get there. Again not a big deal to me. However I despise the curved trigger shoe and feel that the flat trigger shoe should make the 10mm version a very nice option.

As for magazines.... the part number is 3012992 I'd call s&w direct to see if they will sell them to you. That's what I did for the 23rd 9mm mags.

Lastly mrgunsandgear on YouTube has been shooting 40 from his 10mm even though s&w doesn't recommend it.

My vote is Buffalo Bore10mm out of a Glock 20, all nestled in a Kenai chest holster. Hard to best for power and capacity. But that's me.
