I already have a handful of Swiss rifles and I love them, but I decided recently to buy the "Swiss starter kit" from Widener's:
https://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm ... 0|701|1029

Sadly they shipped it using my nemesis FedEx, so I wasn't able to have the packages held for pickup or anything :cussing: , so I had to work from home today so I could be here to sign for them.

They came in two larger boxes; after emptying the boxes, here's what I had:

Image

Here's a little hint for those of you who might ship a rifle: DON'T DO IT LIKE THESE JACKASSES DID IT. Four out of the five rifles had the muzzles unprotected. I've received one rifle in the past that had the muzzle poking out through the cardboard box, and I wasn't happy about it. WRAP THOSE MUZZLES.

Image

After unwrapping them I had, from top to bottom:

- Model 1889
- Model 1896/11 (Model 1896 later upgraded to 1911 specs)
- Model 1911
- Model K11 (1911 carbine)
- Model K31 (carbine)

Image

They're all in great condition, and all of the bores look fantastic. I haven't taken the wood off yet to check numbers, but all of the metal numbers appear to match except for two of the mags. Four of the rifles came with slings. None of them came with muzzle caps.

And no, I haven't checked any for troop tags . . . yet.

I love the trigger pull on Swiss rifles, and these don't disappoint. I measured the trigger pull, just for fun:

1889: 2 lb 14 oz
1896/11: 3 lb 8 oz
1911: 3 lb 9 oz
K11: 3 lb 12 oz
K31: 1 lb 13 oz <-- Yeah, seriously. SMOOTH. In fact, this might not be a good thing . . . these have a looong trigger pull which is typically a nice two-stage. On this one, it just feels like there isn't even a second stage. It's just long and light.

The K31 has some interesting stickers on it:

Here's another cool thing. Did you see those four green cleaning kits in the family photo above? I've never seen them before, and I had no idea they would be included, but apparently they are Swiss Stgw57 cleaning kits.

Here's one opened up:

The grease pots with brushes:

The bore mirror (maybe I'm showing the wrong side!) and the chamber patch jag:

I appreciate your optimism. :cheers2:

I'm planning to hit the range this weekend with a K31 and an 1896/11 (though not the ones above), on which I've mounted scopes using the Swiss Products clamp-on mounts. That damned "A Null" is costing me money. :angryfire:

Talk about getting "into" a family...

Man, you don't mess around. Some think 1 or 2 but nooooo... And you already had some. :wink05:

Nice :thumbsup2:

Now! You have to "feed" them which I know you have plenty to feed... :rofl9:

Very cool "starter" You sure you didn't order 2 sets? thumbsup

I love old rifles, would love to have an old Mauser 8mm, but my shoulder just won't put up with it. Would also like to have an FMLE. I ended up trading away my Mosin, it just hurt too much, same with my old Winchester Model 12, hurt too much, traded.

Yeah, no kidding . . . I'm paranoid now. I kept all of the boxes intact until I had inspected the rifles.

Yeah, the Mosins and the Mauser pack a wallop, that's for sure. I've never shot commercial or milsurp ammo through my Swiss rifles, so I can't give you a comparison recoil-wise.

But David . . . you're a reloader now. :thumbsup2: That means you can custom-make your own ammo, and load lighter-than-normal rounds if you want. Get the gun you like, load the ammo you like, and have fun. thumbsup

Yes, nice bit of kit there Steve. You'd think these sellers would have figured out how to ship rifles by now, doesn't instill a lot of confidence ordering them does it? I guess they are insured, but geeze!

I have seen those cleaning kits online, like here: https://www.libertytreecollectors.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=100. I think Samco has them for $25 each, so that is a nice bonus for you.

Those stickers are match stickers, right? Some kind of competition they were in? For example, discussion here: http://theswissriflesdotcommessageboard.yuku.com/topic/9847/Stickers-on-K31#.VHaiGLvTnug

Since you have been "enhancing" your collection, do you have something you need to part with? I am just starting my collection you know, I would be interested in acquiring some of your "cast-offs".

I'm A Null and I approve this message

I'm guessing from my very old German language skills that your K31 has been in a few women's competitions. That may be the reason the trigger is so light?

SG ammo is having a sale on full boxes of ammo ya know... You know you want it.

Want to split a box?

Thanks for the info . . . I didn't know that. :cheers2:

I know I *should* sell a few, but I don't *want* to sell any. Sorry.

Well, that would be fun . . . but I think I'll pass. I'm bound and determined to make some reloads that will beat that ammo. :mulletslayer:

OH. MY. GOD.

HELL YES.

I already have the cleaning kit . . . and the bayonet . . . now all I need is the rifle! I don't think I could bring myself to cough up eight grand for one, though. If you find a link for one selling for one grand, send me a discreet PM.

Does this mean the K11 in the other family came from a broken home?
