http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Unid ... 18661.htmlQuote: SEATTLE - A woman was shot and later died after an unknown suspect opened fire on 8th Avenue and Yesler Way overnight in Seattle, Detective Patrick Michaude with Seattle Police said. The victim was inside a tent located in a small encampment of homeless people around 1:45 a.m., when someone reached inside with a gun and opened fire, witnesses said. While this is an extremely tragic story...sadly, my first thought was "I wonder if the shooter passed a 594 background check."

I read that yesterday. Just opened fire. Horrible situation.
I too thought of the 594 shtick. Sucks to read the news now with the 594 monkey on your back.

If they ever catch the guilty party, I suspect they will find that the shooter is a heavy drug user and/or mentally ill and either:
A) Stole the gun (without a background check).
or
B) Acquired the gun legally with a background check which didn't flag his/her mental illness.

It could have been stolen.

Very tragic of course. Apparently even with the 594. a new Chief of Police in Seattle and new promotions within the SPD, this tragic event still occurred. 594=

If only the criminal element would learn to follow all these laws and rules that makes us safer. Wouldn't it be great?
Maybe we should endorse and pass a law making it illegal to break the law. That should do it.

The sad thing is, you could probably get a majority of the voters to approve such a referendum. Off topic, but the referendum system itself is the problem. Remember, we have had 230 years of peaceful prosperity in this country (excepting the war over equality, of course), because the founders had the great wisdom to choose a republican government over democracy. We are (or, should be) a society governed by laws (res public), limited government, natural rights of men (stated or not). When you allow a simple majority to determine the laws, you end up with tyranny--"tyranny of the small majority." This is exactly what I-594 represents. Res public. A society of laws. Inviolable rights of men (to freely practice religion, defend themselves, gather peacefully, speak their minds, yada yada). NOT democracy and referenda. Rant over.
