I'll put in my experience just for kicks, since I've been pulled over recently.
Pretty much did what was already said in this post. By the time the officer reaches my window, the engine is off, wallet on the dash, window already down, hands on the wheel fingers up. However by the time I fish my wallet out of my back pocket I don't have time to get my registration. He asks if there are weapons and its location. He automatically assumed I had a license to carry and handed him my DL and CPL while this conversation was taking place. When he asked for registration, I informed him it was in the glove compartment and he instructed me to go ahead and get. Even thanked me for telling him before hand.

Before going back to his car he asked if I had a clean record, I said yep. Came back and he let me go with a warning. By the book, easy peasy.

Now as I type this I realized that I never inform the police if I have a pocket knife clipped to my pocket. Do you guys ever disclose that?

No. However, if the officer were preparing to search me, then yes. They usually ask about "sharp objects or anything that's going to hurt me" so it's obvious. Personally I consider my folding knife a tool more than a weapon.

If you're pulled over, don't go rummaging for ANYTHING including your wallet.
Don't get out of the car. Never say "I HAVE A GUN!" Don't touch your gun, don't move your gun.

Put your driver's window down, turn your engine off, then put both hands on the wheel.

The officer might not ask you for DL/insurance/rego. He might just want to tell you you have a tail light out, or maybe want to check out your car....

If he asks for DL/insurance/rego, tell him where they are eg "they're in the glove box/my wallet/visor" and wait for an ok.

If you feel so inclined you can include your CPL with the papers you hand him/her. But that's up to you.

If you have a gun in the glove compartment with your DL/insurance/rego, say "I am a CPL holder and my firearm is in the glovebox with my license, what would you like me to do?".

If your gun is in its holster there is no need to say anything, unless you are going to put your hands near it. If your holster is the same side as your wallet, I'd also tell him that. "Sir, I'm a CPL holder, and my firearm is on the same side as my wallet, is it ok if I get my wallet out?"

Leave everything up to the cop, he'll tell you what he wants to see, when and how.

We live in Washington USA. Most police assume you are armed until proven otherwise. That's why they want you to stay in the vehicle.

I agree with you, up to a point. I have a friend (real estate agent), who has to travel some really rural & scary roads, often with clients that he has just met. This same vehicle carries his young children as well. I know for sure he carries a small revolver, in a lock box or perhaps in a locked glove box (does not carry on his person). Not my style, but I understand his situation. Circumstances are different for other people.

As GoldDigger said earlier, we have probably :beatdeadhorse5:

I haven't been pulled over in almost 23 years.. Until yesterday... Traveling to Pacific Beach, I was scooting along at 74 in a 60. Came around a corner and there was a WSP, nailed...

Pulled over. I have my registration and insurance in my visor above me, so I had that out already.. Trooper was super nice. Told me who he was, that he was recording audio and video and explained why he pulled me over. He then asked if there were any weapons in the car (large WaGuns sticker, and I was in full schwag), to which I replied there was, loaded on my left hip, and I had a cpl. He asked for my magazine... Odd, but ok. I popped the mag out, and handed it to him, along with registration and DL. He apparently didn't see the 3 other magazines, loaded in the center console, but oh well.

We talked for a minute about how I liked the XD, then he went back to his car.

I used this moment tell my kids that I would probably get a ticket, that I was breaking the law and to use this as a learning experience. He came back, handed me my DL and registration. Thanked me for being honest and to have a nice day. He then placed my mag on the dash in front of the passenger (my son) and told me I could retrieve it once either of us was underway.

I then used the situation to explain to my kids that being nice, considerate and professional works both ways and get me out of a ticket.

#lifelessons

(PS - Full disclosure... It may have also helped that my last name is the same is my sisters, who is a Division Commander in WSP, but pfft.. details.)

Yeah, I haven't been stopped in about twenty years, up until last week.

I'm in the early disclosure camp, and the WSP who stopped me thanked me for it.

First time I've ever received a verbal warning instead of a ticket.

I was carrying my xD9 in a crossbreed super tuck. It has ambi mag release and the holster doesn't cover it. So I just reached back and hit the button.

Put the mag back while holstered too.

Maybe he only wanted you to be able to get one round off?

I got pulled over pulling into Target by Redmond PD a few weeks ago.
My younger daughter is in the car, and was furiously texting mom and big sister "dad got pulled over, OMG!!!!!".

Turns out he just wanted to check out my van (Sportsmobile). Also large WAGuns sticker on it....

After I established there wasn't a ticket involved, we talked about search and rescue stuff for a bit.

That's what I told my kids, right before Ryan picked up one of the spare loaded ones in plain sight and waved it in the air... Saying "but what about these??" sigh.

He pulled you over to look at your rig? I guess it's cool he liked your rig, but almost seems an abuse of power. If there's no reason to stop me, dont stop me.

Lol...yeah, I wondered about the 1 in the chamber, too. Plus, not asking about other mags. Maybe he was just taking 'reasonable' precaution. Lol

Could be he was just watching to see Dan's reaction.

First time for me being pulled over to look at my rig. He blipped the siren, but all he had to do was wait for us to park. Anyway, he was pretty nice and he immediately said "you didn't do anything wrong", was just stoked and wanted to check out the van. We were just inside the parking lot so I just pulled over to the curb.

As I said to my daughter "he had probable cause that our rig was awesome!"

Honestly the only "issues" I've had have been with state troopers of various states. Their hats are a little too tight, if you know what I mean.
