Does anyone know Washington states law in regard to OTF (Out the front)Automatic knifes. I've been considering a Schrade OTF knife with I believe a "4 blade and only one side is sharp. Are these legal to carry

Automatic knives are illegal. Each city has a different blade length with 3.5" max being the most common.

Hi phorsfall my understanding is that WA state law defines the term 'spring blade knife' as follows (excerpt taken from 2012 legislation):
9 "Spring blade knife" means any knife, including a prototype,
10 model, or other sample, with a blade that is automatically released by
11 a spring mechanism or other mechanical device, or any knife having a
12 blade which opens, or falls, or is ejected into position by the force
13 of gravity, or by an outward, downward, or centrifugal thrust or
14 movement. A knife that contains a spring, detent, or other mechanism
15 designed to create a bias toward closure of the blade and that requires
16 physical exertion applied to the blade by hand, wrist, or arm to
17 overcome the bias toward closure to assist in opening the knife is not
18 a spring blade knife.

I belive this would include all automatic knives, whether OTF or other design. These are generally prohibited in WA state with the exception of several categories of personnel. I believe this is limited to military, law enforcements, and fire/rescue personnel though the exact verbage of the exceptions is included in the link above.

Found an interesting resource on state laws regarding automatic knives that might be helpful for you. They are legally allowed in far more states than I expected.
https://www.akti.org/state-laws-regarding-automatics/

I own a nice Benchmade Presidio automatic here in Texas though have to be careful about traveling with it as they are not legal to the west in New Mexico or to the east in Louisiana.

Recently picked up a CRKT Minimalist for use as a neck knife where auto knives are prohibited.

The thing is, I think what you're asking about is actually an assisted open knife. Is it on this page? https://www.bladehq.com/cat--Schrade-OTF--227

Assisted open knives require a action to set the blade in motion towards opening (other than just pushing a button.) I think schrade is kind of toeing the line on this one but their assisted OTF knives require you to push a slide lever in the direction that the blade open which basically starts the movement of the blade before the assist spring kicks in. It's a grey area for sure.

I think the way the OTF knives open is cool but I probably wouldn't carry one. They're a little bulky anyway.

I declare these laws null and void on the basis of being useless.
