The thing I really didn't like about the AR, though, was chasing brass; I much prefer being able to pull the bolt back and hold my hand in front of the action to block the brass, and have them drop right next to the rifle.

I've got a life hack for ya that might just change the way you see shooting semi auto out in Montana. It's a little hard to see in the pics, but try it out. Take a baseball cap (mine is an old SGN hat) and hook the head size adjustment strap around your scope base. Hang the hat over your ejection port so the ejected brass hits inside the hat and falls down on the ground. It doesn't melt like a brass collector. Never interferes with the ejection. And it collects the brass in a neat little pile on the ground right next to your rifle.

It won't cure "trigger happy," but it will save you from having to pick your brass out of the prairie dog shit 10-15ft away. I also carry a lightweight foam mat rolled up on my pack and shoot prone position from the top of a prairie dog mound. (I recommend clearing the dog hole first to avoid unfortunate encounters with rattlers) I usually fire a round from my PMR-30 down the hole before setting up then cover the hole with my pack to make sure no unwanted guests come out of the hole while I'm shooting there.

And just so everyone knows what they're missing...

Question to everyone: What's the hunting equivalent of "glamping"?

Dunno what made me think of it.

Sleeping in the bed of your truck with a canopy that has sliding windows and a light is my "glamping." Elk camp and the guys that have huge wall tents with stoves and cots is another form of hunting glamping.

Picking this story back up ... right after I wrote the original review above, I contacted Vortex about the broken zoom ring and Ruger about the chamber problem. They both got right back to me and told me to send in the scope and rifle, respectively. Then my lazy ass did nothing until this past Wednesday, 8/8, when they both got dropped in the mail/UPS.

So the clock is ticking, let’s see how this goes.

Updates on the returned rifle and scope:

Rifle: Shipped 8/8/18, received by Ruger on 8/15/18, no updates.

Scope: Shipped 8/8/18, received by Vortex on 8/10/18. Email from Vortex received on 8/10 thanking me for sending it in, giving me a copy of the service order, and telling me that the average turnaround time for them to service and ship it is 5-7 business days. On 8/14 (two business days later), the scope was shipped back to me, and received on 8/17.

The issue that I had with the scope was that when I turned the zoom ring, most (not all) of the time the scope would not zoom. The Vortex paperwork that I received says, "Inspected the scope and found the magnification ring screw was backing out. The screw was secured. The scope was checked and all functions and optics are normal."

So . . . I guess that means that the screw shown here was just loose? Could it have been that simple?

*shrug*

OK . . . note for the future, then, in case I ever have the same issue again.

Now c'mon, Ruger . . . .

All righty then, here's an update on the rifle:

Shipped 8/8/18, received by Ruger on 8/15/18.
Shipped back 8/20/18, received by me on 8/28/18.

So . . . it was at Ruger for five days. OK, that's not bad at all. thumbsup

Here's the paperwork:

New barrel . . . ok, that's good and that's what I was hoping for.

Complementary cleaning cloth . . . I dunno, I'm not sure that the yellow really goes with the green of the rifle. But all right, I can deal with it.

I made it to the range this morning with SAGELA and MyNameIs940. I didn't let SAGELA touch the rifle because I didn't want him to outshoot and embarrass me, but I had no fear of that with Shawn so I let him have a go at it. Both he and I shot roughly 1.25" five-shot groups at 100 yards with my 50-grain Zmax bullets. Looking back in this thread, I see that I shot as low as 0.7" groups with the old barrel. Hmmm. This may require more testing. Or maybe Ruger didn't tighten the stock up correctly, and I should go back and fix it for them.
