Wife's '08 RAV4, 4cyl.
The Engine Maintenance Required light came on yesterday. I thought I could clear it out by plugging in the OBD tester. No such luck but also it didn't throw any codes out. Any ideas?

Rick...
The Engine Maintenance Required light is different than an obd2 Computer malfunction.
How many miles on it?
Could it be the prompt for the 105K service?

NOT being a smartass, but everything, including a loose gas cap, can be the culprit, per preliminary Goog references... http://www.google.com/search?q=Engine+M ... ent=safari

Someone here sent me the link to clearing out that light. I'll try it tomorrow.
Jim, is this one of those "scare" lights to make you believe it's going to blow up so you'll take it to the dealer?

You can always try the old disconnect the battery trick. Leave it unhooked overnight.

I really was trying to help... I stopped reading when one of the first responses via the Googs was that even a loose gas cap cause this. I was inferring to start with the simplest fix first. So, if it were me, I'd do that...what the hell, why not....

A good first thing to check is the gas cap like NWG said...it will trigger a light.

Not all CELs will show a code on the cheaper code readers , sometimes you have to use a 'real'scanner and go into the specific manufatures side rather than OBD.

Rick ...maintenance lights are usually reset by turning ign on, no engine start, and set display to odometer.
shut ign off...
hold reset button down and turn key on....keep holding until maintenance light flashes and goes out.
turn ign off.
then start car...light should be off.
127K?
Has the timing belt been serviced yet ...If it has one.
Edit...
I just checked, 2008 Rav 4 4cyl has chain.
You're ok!

Some need the odo on odo some need it on trip A. Then hold the button down and turn the key on. The maintenance reminder light is exactly that. Comes on at 5k miles last reset.

Drive it down to your Local Auto zone or Schuck's and have them scan it Rick....for Free. Their code readers are pretty good, that would really help you narrow it down. Make sure the Gas cap is tight before you go too.

Replaced the gas cap several times as did the guy who owned it before her. If you took the cap off then put it back on, the light would go out in about a half hour. The emissions monkeys checked the gas cap, said it was fine. Think it was probably a leak somewhere in the filler tube, never did figure it out.
