Ok, so I am wondering if I could hunt deer with a 12" 6.5 grendel AR pistol?

My reading of the regs leads me to believe the caliber is good due to pistol caliber requirements being the same as rifle (24 center fire cal or larger). Research also leads me to believe I can push a 120gr Nosler BT at 2400fps mv which gives me expansion to 350-400yds and 800+ ft-lbs of energy which should be plenty for deer.

Bonus question:
Would adding a scope to a pistol stray into the bounds of redesigning to be fired from the shoulder?

Heck no, it would not. You can still use a scope with a buffer tube up against your cheek, right? The scope isn't just for shoulder-fired guns.

Of course, I'm not a lawyer or an ATF agent, but I've never seen any discussion about scopes having an effect on the pistol/rifle definition.

I'm no lawyer, but should be legal. Lots of pistols have scopes.

Not sure why you would want to. If you are going to hold it in a traditional pistol grip, it's,going to be pretty front heavy. If you are going to shoulder the brace, a rifle with a longer barrel would give you better ballistics and not blow out your hearing as much.

I've owned some AR and AK pistols, Hungarian AMD short barreled rifle in 7.62X39................
AMD SBR was lucky to hit a 10" target at 100 yards, and it had a folding shoulder stock.
The pistols were worse. The AK's, couldn't hit a fucking thing.

Unless you get a 'brace' that you hold to your shoulder when nobody is looking......

My property is thick with trees and brush. I mounted my ATN night scope on my 300 blackout pistol with a 9” barrel and suppressor using Barnes Vortex black tips to hunt coyotes. A long rifle would be nearly impossible to hunt them.

Yes your fine. The 12.5” Grendel will easily harvest some backstraps within a couple hundred yards.

This. The platform and caliber are plenty capable for deer hunting, and you're well within the game regs.

I am presuming you're going to use a brace and not try to hold it like a revolver. LOL.

BTW a 12.5" Grendel is way more capable at distance than the numbers would indicate, if you have a decent barrel. Mine is also 12.5" but is an SBR; hits on head-sized rocks at 600 yards are surprisingly easy.

I'll be suppressing it, which is part of why I want a short barrel. 26-28 inches of barrel+supressor beating the draws doesn't sound fun.

I've seen some good write ups on 12" barrels with 6.5 Grendel shooting accurately to 500yds, so I'm pretty sanguine about the longer shots.

I will test it on the range to at least 200 and hopefully push it to 1k before running out after the deer all half cocked [emoji16].

Deer hunting with a pistol means you can keep it loaded while you’re driving the roads through the lands that are legal to take deer in.
