Ok, so now I'm interested in giving this safety razor thing a go....

I already use the bowl and soap, started that about 9 months ago.

Any particular brand I should check out? I have been using the mach eighteenbazillion for 15 or so years...to damn expensive to keep using them but my new career is going to demand a clean shave. I figure if I get the hang of it in the next six months the scar tissue will have a chance to somewhat heal before I have to enter an office building for work.....

My dad taught me to shave using his dad's safety razor when I was around thirteen or so. Used one up till I joined the USN (when I wasn't sporting a beard which was a lot of the time), and then the issued us some crappy disposable in boot camp & I had a hard time adjusting. I can understand why they didn't want boots to have razor blades though. That didn't stop us from stomping on them to break out the blades to use them to cut big erasers into dice so we could play craps in the barracks at night. I have no idea what happened to my grandfather's razor after my dad died, hopefully one of my brothers has it, but I really don't know. My dad had switched to an electric razor, so I don't know when he last used his safety razor. I shave with an electric razor now and have for decades. Which doesn't stop me from making razor handles for people who do. Sorry, shameless plug. I do remember my other grandfather had a surgical Arkansas stone which was sort of shaped into a "U" that he used to keep his razors sharp, as well as a leather strop. He showed me how to use it (one of very few memories of him, he died when I was a kid). I'm pretty sure my uncle ended up with all of that after he was gone, and we didn't find any of his stuff when my uncle died, so he may have given it away.

Picked up an inexpensive razor at Sally's Beuty Supply and a pack of Derby blades....watched a few youtube "tips and trick" vid's and 30 min later my face is as smooth as my 8 month old Grand-daughters skin

The Mrs. actually likes the "smelly" aftershave that made my skin scream RAPE!!! I put on afterwards

Thanks Drew. Now I'm waiting on my order to arrive. What sold me was the cost of blades. I should save a decent amount of money next year by switching.

Sensitive skin? Sensitive skin? What is that? If sounds like media programming... like that stupid commercial comparing cowhide to human skin. Of course cowhide will dry out if not maintained..it has been removed from the animal therefore, the natural oils cannot protect it. Nothing more useless than comparing two similar but different things to sell shit to the brain dead. Caveman growl !!

I have 2 razors a 1957 superspeed a d a 1961 adjustable both Are gilettes. I suggest everyone starting out go to that smelly store in the mall and get the bigelow ( proraso) shave cream and a sampler pack of blades online. Also if you find a blade you don't like give it a month and try it again, I hated feathers, now I use them most of the time. A lot of blades suck for me but you maybe relly like them..if any new Guys have questions let me know I've been doing this for a year now it's been great.

I don't use a safety razor, but I love the shit from the Art of Shaving.

Their preshave oil makes all the difference for me.

It's truley not that bad in there, smells pretty good and the dame's arn't half bad to look at
