David...Don't know why it changed. I just take off the head to change the razor. Everything seems solid on reassembly.
I'll admit I didn't like how the grain opened up when wet. It would get too rough for me, then when it dried the awesome color would go away so it looked a little dull. So I put a few coats of urethane on it. Looks very glossy which i like. Does make it a weebit slippery thou.

Drew...stupid question, but do you use the cup as a holder and also have something for the soap?
*got my soap-n-bowl, but no where to place the razor nor brush but ontop the soap

I have the soap in an old coffee cup that was rather small. Works great. The mug in the picture holds my razors and barbers brush.

I have been using a safety razor for about 3 years now and love the fact that it costs me practically nothing compared to buying the damn mach 3 blades :angryfire: think I bought my whole setup(boars hair brush, soap cake, dish, and razor) off of amazon for about 40 bucks, need to buy new blades though im down to 1 from the original 5 that came with the razor, and no i dont shave everyday either.

I want to get my razors re plated, where did you have it done? And why does everyone say they cut themselves, I have been shaving like this for over a year and only bleed if I take the top off a bump and even then it's just a tiny amount of blood.

Thanks Madpick - I'll try to post some gun photos eventually.

I had my razor replated by west coast razors (not to be confused with west coast shaving). The guy did a superb job, I have no complaints whatsoever about the quality of the work he did or the price (~$80 with shipping; this razor was $7 at an antique store - so what I have invested is comparable to some modern high end razors). But it took far longer than predicted (over 6 months), which wouldn't have been so bad but communication was poor (at best) to the point where I wasn't sure if I was ever going to see the razor again. There is a whole thread on this business over at badger and blade, apparently my experience was pretty typical.

uwdawgs - As far as the adjustable razors, I usually leave the razor on 4 or 5. But I've found that if I go more than 24 hrs between shaves cranking it up to a more aggressive 7 or 8 makes the shave more comfortable. If you are already used to DE shaving then I am not sure why the adjustable would be worse (maybe the adjustment mechanism isn't working?). If you weren't used to the razor then that might be your issue - I find it took a while to get used to the angle and where on my face I was more prone to cutting myself (for example I always shave the left side of my neck on an upstroke to avoid cuts - not sure why - but it works). It could also be the blade - I cut myself a lot with Derbys.

So I got this coupon for 30% off everything on this site
http://www.eshave.com/
Catch is I have to use my prepaid AmEx card for it. Is there enough interest in their products for a group buy?
The deadline for order placement is 25MAR13.

I think I've finally got her dialed in.... Swapped out the Gillette adjustable for a long handled Merkur and the blood letting stopped ! Holy crap this is a close shave. Almost fun!

I saw the article on the Art of Manliness website a while ago and finally got a safety razor for my bday. I expected: A much closer shave than what I get with the mach 3. Taking longer to shave as I learned to let gravity pull the razor down instead of pulling it myself. Cutting myself often in the beginning.

1. The shave seems to be about the same closeness as the mach 3. In fact, the mach 3 can reach higher under my nose than the safety razor, which is a bit annoying.

2. I haven't cut myself yet, so I've sped up to about how fast I shaved with the mach 3. I also have to pull the razor some, esp for the parts under my chin where the direction of pull isn't straight down.

3. The shaving cream seems to solidify as I shave and gum up the razor. I have to keep re-wetting it. Does this happen for anyone else? If I don't re-wet it, I have to pull the razor even harder across my skin.

I do not have dense facial hair at all. I shave five days a week. I don't know why it isn't a closer shave, or why I have to pull the razor. These things happen even if I change the blade every two shaves.

Any similar experiences?

:thumbsup2: Very nice Derizen!

1. To me it feels as close but doesn't look at close. I get closer under the nose then those stupid ass 3-5blade things.

2. I cut(nick) myself every shave, but by the time i'm done and in/out of the shower, there's nothing there. (i'm getting old and my skin doesn't like any kind of shaving i guess)

3. My soap is cheap and dries up quick. I wish I could have ordered something with ManikMakki, but this shit will last forever.

4. Have only used some cheap blades that I change once a week, forgot one week and haven't really noticed a difference. Keep telling the wife to pick up different brands but I don't think she gets it :frust:

*wouldn't say it's therapeutic but I like it. There is something about shaving in front of the mirror and not in the shower maybe?

1. Make your skin tighter, puff out your cheeks or pull your skin. That should help it get deeper.

2. I'm of no help.

3.what cream are you using? Try some proraso, it is sold in one of those smelly stores in the mall under the bieglow name, use a brush to build up lather. And the biggest one dunk the razor in your sink and make the razor spin using a snap yo fingers motion. Water is your friend.

Try different blades. I like feathers and red personas, hate Derbys and many others. But your skin may hate feathers and love Derbys. Get a sampLer pack. But if you hate a blade put it in the back of your drawer, one day you might end up liking them.

Drew gave me a kit to start with today. I haven't shaved in 4 years, but I'm interviewing for a new career that requires a clean shave every day. I have the razor that delliotg made. It's really nice! This was my first shave in 4 years and my first shave with a safety razor. I cut myself once, but in the spot I always cut myself at. Didn't bleed much at all. I look fuckin weird without a beard, but if I can land this job it will be worth it. What do you guys use for an aftershave? Also, where can I buy razors and other "old school" shaving supplies locally? Locally as in Olympia area.
