Do they participate in raids or investigative visits on illegal grow operations? Because if so, I guess there might be a bit of validity in there somewhere. I have no idea, I'm just asking the question. I know they conduct site visits for other areas under their jurisdiction (research facilities that use animals, etc.).

The truth.........is not nearly as cool as the speculation

The U.S. Forest Service is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

USFS has a branch of armed law enforcement officers and some armed backcountry forest rangers.

Dammit Dan. You took away a percentage of the outrage.

Still remaining : Why does USFS Ranger need a SMG more than a rancher walking his property?

Sorry......I try not to be a downer but it happens.

For the rat-ta-ta-tat bang bang toys.......They don't, and most likely won't. The SMGs will probably be for the actual law enforcement officers and detectives.

The backcountry rangers usually just have shotguns and bolt action rifles.

Internal Affairs/Inspector General. Every federal agency has one. Their job is internal policing (crimes committed by their own employees) and crimes committed against, or threats to the agency.
And the US Forest Service... the Park Rangers.. is part of the UDSA.

Could all just come under the parent Department's bid... they bid for all their divisions to get a better deal by a bigger purchase.

I didn't even read the links... I'd seen something about this earlier.
It's the IG's office.

So yeah, when they arrest the GS13 taking kickbacks, and the crazy terrorist going after the USDA inspectors so they can't certify our bacon supply.
