Dark, heavy, flavorful is my first choice. But if it's gotta be light, let it have a bite! Gotta serve the dark beer not very cold, and the light beers ice cold! Either way I aim for something with higher alc content. I imbibe occasionally as a treat not a habit or to get fallin' down drunk, so I enjoy savoring good flavors.
Dark Belgians like Chimay Grand Reserve Old Rasputin Imperial Stout - a stout with 9% alc! Irish Death - on tap at Puyallup Total Wine right now, growler up! Lots of different Porters are good
Then there's Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA - 9% alc with a bite softened by a caramel-like flavor. My favorite IPA by far. Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA is an easy go-to, twice the alc and flavor of "cheap" beer, but not twice the price. HMM, the list could go on....
I don't do liquor and rarely wine, but another treat I enjoy is an aged Tawny Port. I know serious Port people may frown, but sipping a 10, or better yet 20, yr old Tawny for dessert is great.

New Belgium Brewing's Trippel Ale, or Pyramid's Apricot Ale (fine, call me a girl...I can take it).

Just about everything I've had from Brewdog has been awesome. Their Libertine Black Ale is my current fix; it's a mix between an IPA and a Stout, the best of both worlds. They also have a great IPA called Punk IPA and if you're a tough guy they make an Imperial Stout called Tokyo that's 18.2% ABV....
