http://news.yahoo.com/don-t-blame-colle ... 16423.html

it references one very true fact that to a degree reflects what I have many times tried to get people to grasp

F. Scott Fitzgerald cited as the hallmark of first-rate intelligence – "the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and retain the ability to function"

it's some food for thought...

we all complain about people being brainwashed, but don't bother to stop and ask if we may as well be brainwashed...

being able to play devil's advocate or try to disprove ones beliefs if only to reinforce it or to learn about what you missed is a very important exercise that used to be common place, but has been dumbed out of the school system, so now we have people who are highly educated but unable to comprehend that maybe their views/vision is not the only valid one out there...

if you cannot watch both fox and msnbc without being pissed off enough that you stopped listening to one of the other, then you may already be partially be brainwashed.. it's helpful to listen to the opposition to understand where they are coming from and help reinforce your argument on why you disagree with them...

that said, I may be totally wrong .. this is just my take on things..

That is always good advice

I changed my stance on illegal immigrants. One day while leaving Home Depot there were a dozen or so illegal (assumed on my part) Latin Americans/Mexicans on the left side of my car, on the right was what appeared to be an able-bodied white man holding a sign begging for money.

It all came clear to me, we have people so lazy that they would rather humiliate themselves and beg for money than to work. On the flip side we have people, risking everything, leaving their home with little more than the clothes on their back....just for the chance to put a new roof on someone's home.

Nope I say let the immigrants in, but in exchange we get rid of the lazy, welfare state, non-contributors. We can send them on a one-way trip to Mexico or Guatemala, where they wont have to be worried about looking for a job

The problem is there is no more shame in begging.... they are proud of it...better than being on welfare as some would say...

And there is no shame in welfare either...

People on welfare should be on a public website so we know when they drive new cars

One for one swap, I have been pushing this for years. When I was working in a manufacturing shop I realized, I would take an illegal mexican over ten white kids right out of high school any day.

I went to HS out in Leavenworth, lived near the Blewett/Hwy 2 "Y". Actually lived in a pear orchard, although we didn't run it. High school kids and drifters used to do the agriculture work back in the day. But then the kids got soft, and the drifters got welfare...so immigrants filled the gap. They worked their butts off and sucked up more Malathion than is healthy! We had way more problems with the second gen Mexican immigrants (Chicanos), some of whom didn't have the same work ethic and thought that white people owed them something. Not all --- not stereotyping here --- but enough that us po' white people noticed.

Some of the gray hairs were upset though. They remembered those halcyon days when Ward Cleaver, Richie Cunningham, and Eddie Haskell picked all the pears & apples, and woke up one day and it was Paco, Jose, and Enrique doing it instead. They rolled their eyes when a car would go down the street blaring that Mexican accordion music. What did I do? Ended up marrying a girl from El Salvador...guess it didn't sink in.

In the late 60s, my dad and one of his buddies paid a good chunk of their tuition to Central by picking apples and cherries around Wenatchee during summer break.

Today's college kids would never do that, and it wouldn't even make a dent in their tuition.

Two large problems in themselves.

I could never figure out affirmative action...

It's not like you can suddenly make somebody smarter by just going to school without fixing their social issues at home...

Poor parental support usually leads to poor outcomes
