http://youtu.be/TGZMSmcuiXMI would welcome your perspective on this, whether you are a veteran or not. This is from the TED speaker series, which oftentimes is provocative, but often irritating as well. The speaker in this case is not a combat veteran, but rather a veteran war correspondent. His comments are his personal opinion, based upon years of battle coverage experience. "Why do veterans miss war?...." is his question. The talk itself is interesting, but I have one major quibble with the speaker. Twice did he mention (his opinion) that "...we need to answer this question, if we are ever to prevent war again...." (I paraphrase). This is complete bunkum. Soldiers never start wars; leaders (politicians) do. Understanding why soldiers (veterans) miss their war experiences will do squat to prevent future wars. (That part is my opinion.)

Chicken hawks miss war. Before, during, and after. Cause they can. Assholes.
The worst stay home, and become leaders and politicians.
The best honor their country, the Constitution, and their fellow man by serving.
It should be the other way around.
Troops miss teamwork, friendship, and trust, near as i can tell based on observance.
Nope, I never served.
Ted talks seem to be the new holding tank for idiocracy.

Only ones who (should) miss it are REMFs who get all the extra pay & medals for being in a combat zone yet have almost none of the risk and don't see their buddies get killed or wounded.

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother; be ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition. And gentlemen in England now abed, Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhood's cheap whiles any speaks, That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day." - William Shakespeare ("King Henry V")
The bonds that are forged in steel and blood amongst soldiers are like that unseen by but a handful of people. You eat with your brothers, you shower, you go to chow, you maintain your weapons, with your brothers, they stand watch over you while you sleep, they cover your six when in the field, they drag you to safety if you go down. You cry together, weep the loss of fallen brothers together. There is no brother like those that you serve with.
You don't miss war, you miss your brothers, the ones you lost, and those lucky enough I still be walking amongst us.

this guy hit the nail on the head. It's not the war I actually miss, but the comradery you build with everyone you work with. It truly does become a brotherhood. Nobody misses being shot at or almost killed, but its something you accept is going to happen when you go to war. There's things you have to do in war that you'll never forget. Sometimes its bad, sometimes its good. I def do not miss being in an actual combat zone. But I do miss the things that happen because you're in a combat zone (if that makes any sense). But like I said.. I think this guy hit the nail on the head. I'm glad it came from someone with actual experience over there rather than some idiot politician who saw it happen on tv.

TRUST.
No sane man misses war. As stated above, the BROTHERHOOD. When we come back, to the kind of politics and draaama bullshit here - who can you TRUST?
You trust your Brothers, and very few others.
OK

OK Dead on. I had a long conversation yesterday with a fellow soldier from the Vietnam days. He went to Vietnam with the first US troops to set foot in the country. The only people he feels totally comfortable with are others that wore the uniform. He shared some experiences yesterday he doesn't talk of with anyone who didn't serve. A total lack of trust that they'll understand what he lived though (although wounded in action more than once). Any man who's "seen the elephant" hates war. Einstein and Geo. McGovern had it right when they said old men dream up/start wars for young men to die in. How about this? Let the next war be fought on the battlefield with each sides "Leaders" doing battle. Let the Armies sit in the stands and watch for a change. Let's see how many wars get started if those are the rules for the next one.

11 years in 6 navy 5 army ng never been to a war zone during my serving I do miss the friendship I had with likeminded people When I got out...I ran into nothing but those wanting to take advantage of those of us who take pride in serving others. LEO's and firefighters know this feeling as well (they serve daily) I like many that served never stopped serving.....and never will The ones that have stopped serving either never started or are remembered on this weekend by those who never served, and remembered by those who served on a daily basis. It doesn't take a special weekend for us to remember. Forgetting is NOT an option.

6 years US Army Infantryman, 2 deployments each with a different unit. I have been out for almost 2 years now. For every happy memory or exciting time shooting big guns or nearly getting driven off a cliff by my best friend. I also remember 30 bullshit times like being forced to come back to base and help some 21 year old kid clean his barracks room or some shit like that. I don't miss the army, I miss my friends and the honor I carried. I'm a husband and a father now going to school with a night security guard job (no not a mall) and all I really miss is the feeling of doing something very few others would. There was never a greater honor for me than wearing that uniform. I miss that most of all.
