Don't beat yourself up over this. I've lost a few friends over the years that NEVER showed any signs I could see. In the Army we have classes about this all the time, but it still happens and it still hurts. It sucks, and you did what you can do. I had a First Sergeant that came in on his off time during the weekend to check on the troops. I was on duty, and we bs'd about an upcoming game, and he seemed fine. Monday morning came, and he didn't make it in to work ever again. WAGUN=one hell of a community.

My most sincere condolences, Mash Man. I've had two friends take their own lives in the last few years. It's a very hard thing to go through.

I'm sorry Mash :( My dad's best friend, my godfather, rented a hotel room near his house and bought a sidearm for just this purpose. He had lost his amazing wife years before and was never quite the same since. He left three kids and hundreds of friends in a devastated place without him. The hole in his life became a void in everyone else's world.
After my mother passed, and still everyday, I watch my dad for these same signs. It is a vigorous process, and lifd-draining as well. MsFK and I used to cringe to take even a weekend away, scared of what we might come back to. To keep a long depressing story short, and not trying to sound like a hippy, but love all you can as much as you can for you never know how much they might need it, or if you will be not be able to share that love again.

Mash, I'm so so very sorry to hear this about your friend. There are no words to express true condolences, however I know exactly how you feel at the moment. A year and a half ago a very good old friend of mine did the same thing on 9/11, not only am I reminded of an American tragic event I'm also reminded that my friend gave up. It's never an easy thing to deal with, I had to leave work the next day because I didn't want my co workers to see me cry. I wish there was more I could say and do but it sounds like your on the right track by offering your help to anyone that might be going through a similar hard time in life. Never met you but you sound like a good and righteous man.
