Ahh, the mythical "element of surprise, tactical advantage". BG pointing gun at you, and demanding your money. Oh wait, I will dig out my gun to surprise you if you don't shoot me please. Well, a J frame or small .380 in your pocket... "ok, I'll give you my wallet." Deflect robber's gun, while drawing yours.... of course that actually takes practice. A lot of practice. So not as realistic for many. In a store while the clerk is being robbed, it's not uncommon for other customers to be ignored...

Open carry makes me real nervous when some moron walks into a Starbucks with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder or an AR-15 at low ready "because he can" intent on "educating the public." It makes responsible gun owners and 2d Amendment supporters look like a bunch of uncivilized wack-jobs. Over and over we've seen businesses that are neutral on firearms forced to choose a side by the idiotic demonstrations of open-carry advocates. As in everything, just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

It does not make me nervous to open carry, or see open carry of handguns. however.... I doubt many 2nd A supporters are comfortable with slung rifles in public places of high traffic.
Would any of us just think "meh, no big deal" or would we be on an internal high alert as well? I carry a handgun with several methods. Concealed in waistband 70% of time, open carry on belt 20% of time, and thigh rig open carry 10% or less.. All my carry sidearms are full size. The thigh rig is for backpacking, or when I am in the mountains. I am not hesitant to wear it on my trip to the mountains, or from the mountains back to home. I have worn it several times into grocery stores/gas stations on my way to the mountains or from the mountains. Still have never had a problem with people... not openly, and those that look hesitant, I open a dialogue and have a mini discussion.
But I feel open carrying rifles has an appropriate time and place. Like Olympia, and in our capitol building, when we have a pro 2nd A rally that needs more support. But taking rifles into private businesses is not productive, and asking for trouble.
There are right ways and wrong ways and grey areas to this discussion.... in the general publics eye, and that, unfortunately does need to be considered. I feel the tide of propaganda is mounting against us particularly lately. Brian
