Well I finally decided to quit building bikes at Walmart to be self-employed and build my gun shop. My hours of operation will change from Fridays and Saturdays only to Monday-Friday. Work has piled up to the point where I'm losing money working for someone else. My lead times are way too long. At the moment I have 6 full restorations going with more on the way. Most are return customers and I want to thank them for helping me make the decision. I didn't realize how hard it would be to say, "I'm done" to a job I have been doing for almost ten years, Its like an addition. Now it's in my hands. Now the real work begins. My dad always told me to always question authority and never let fear of the unknown decide your fate. I never realized the full extent of that advice until now. Sink or swim, I have to give it a shot. If I don't, its something I will regret the rest of my life.
ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY NEVER LET FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN DECIDE YOUR FATE

Wow ... good for you. That must be terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your good work.

Heck yhea. Being your own boss is rewarding and scary at the same time. Don't let the down time get to you, and try and stay busy!

Good for you! That's something I have wrestling with for some time now. A couple more years and I will have 20 in at Boeing. The same year our Pension is "Frozen". I envy you, and I hope it works out. Good Luck.

Great news, Tigershark! I wish you the best.
I too am self-employed: worst boss I ever had!
Now for a little bit of a reality check: you are NOT a gunsmith, restorer, or any other like-term. You are a business owner; do not forget to schedule time to "run" your business, i.e. return calls/emails, pay bills, do taxes, FILE THAT PAPER. I have watched many people get behind on that stuff and it is no fun playing catchup.

Congratulations! As others have said, be ready for fun and terror at the same time. Don't forget to schedule time now and then to rest and recharge. You'll come back better than you left.
