My grandparents (long gone) came from the east coast where these were quite common. This was sitting in my parents back yard almost rusted away so I figured I would restore it for them. Not knowing what it would look like after sand blasting I didn't take any pictures wondering if it was gonna make it but I found this picture on the web which looks new compared with how mine looked after sitting close to 50 years.
Image
After sandblasting, used an industrial strength rust inhibitor. Then I did a skim coat to hide the seams and then I sprayed it 3 times with black rustolium
Image
I'm still in the process of painting him but I'm wondering if I should make him period correct (black) or if I should buckle to the "non racial" pressure... I'm still painting him, multiple coats are required but here's where he is at now:

I still have to do another coat of the white then the vest, tie and ribbon on the hat will be dark red.
They are worth too much so it'll never be visible from the street for fear his legs will miraculously work but I'm trying to decide if I should get some tan/beige...
Thoughts?

Make him look like Obama.

Hybrid cafe au lait.

Clear coat him afterwards so when the dogs pee on him out in the yard, his features are recognizable for years to come.

Great YouTube video material there.

I disagree. Painting it like Michael Jackson in white face is racist. This is a historical piece (100+years old) and when it was originally acquired by my grand parents it was black so changing it is like trying to change history. Some people may not like it but they probably aren't fans of German helmets and black rifles either!
Fuck'em

I will say I'm not going to paint eyes or lips on him. He is jocko style and I'm thinking I won't mess with history.

Some of the Black Americana lawn jockeys can be worth a decent amount of cash even in rough/poor shape. I've seen examples that had almost no original paint left with surface rust bring quite a lot due to the rarity of that particular piece.

If you google them you'll see one in rough shape that they want $900 for.
If you Google Obama lawn jockey then ya find sites that push boundaries

Not sure I would have "restored" it if I was you, which im not. As Dan said before, they are worth quite a pretty penny in original shape. Either way, nice score, and will be a nice piece. Looking forward to seeing it complete.

Had to restore it because it's 100 year old pot metal and it was so rusted it might have lasted 10 years tops. These things sit outside in the rain & snow year round. This one came from the coast in Massachusetts where the sea air did a number on him.
I was going to start the red today but when I opened it, it was all dry! Now I gotta get more... :angryfire:
I'll post picks when I'm done

NO WAY AM I DOING THAT.... I'm going to mix a little white and black together for his hair but the face is staying as it is now. I want in period correct but not blatantly racist!

Take him down to the range. He'd be perfect for holding up a steel target.

JK, nice restoration. thumbsup
