If that one life saved down the road by taking the "impaired" driver off the road could be mine or that of a family member, I have no issue with taking little more than the time it takes for a traffic light.
That's MY opinion which may vary from YOUR opinion. That's life.
if its ok to stop people for no reason is it ok for them to go house to house and come in your home ? Maybe you have something in there that you shouldn't ? But to be safe we should just check right ?[/quote]
My comment was focused totally on the issue of motor vehicle check points, not "going house to house".
Time and time again the Courts have held that driving a motor vehicle is NOT a constitutionally protected right but a privilege that can be regulated. Almost all case law involving an "intrusion into one's rights" involves only passengers or a search of the vehicle.
How about this. Why not just require that all motor vehicles come from the factory with ignition interlocks like those who are convicted of DUI have to have installed now.
That would end the need for any "checkpoint" as the frigging car wouldn't start if you've been drinking. No more DUI's, no more alcohol related crashes and deaths.
Like I said, it's MY opinion and not necessarily that of others. Having spent a month flat on my back in the hospital and being to walk without walker, crutches, or cane, for almost 4 years tends to make me a little biased against drinking drivers. (BTW, the bozo that hit me only had minimal insurance so I got almost nothing in compensation for the inconvenience and pain that I've had to put up since 1969. Just think how many drivers today don't have a dime's worth of insurance).
