First off, I would like to state that I am an Open Carrier. Mostly on the weekends, out and about in the woods, or at some sort of political protest. I fully support the right to keep and bear arms, I am all for political moves to further that cause.

I also believe that there are times when open carry is not appropriate, and that is what I wish to address here today.

Pulling a move like open carrying an AR, or an SKS into a PRIVATE BUSINESS, is fucking stupid. Full stop. Unless you are there, with the explicit permission of the owner there is little to no reason to OC in a private venue like that.

Take Starbucks, for years they just never wanted to take a side on a political issue. Until some people took it upon themselves to drag long guns into the store.

There is little to no practical reason for bearing a longgun on someone else’s private property. I say this as a person who still OCs his pistol on the weekends into Starbucks, when I am forced to go there for a coffee run. Personally I HAAAATE their roast, but I digress.

The only reason you would bring a rifle, is to make a political statement. I get that, I respect that. However keep your political protests on public property.

Do you think that any Gun Store would allow gun control advocates to protest INSIDE their store, with a giant picket sign? Do you think WalMart would let union protesters strip naked in the store and paint their necks blue?

How is this any different than you carrying your picket sign inside of a private store? Your picket sign might be an AR15, but it is the same thing.

Look, we still can come out ahead in this. None of these places have outright banned firearms. They have asked you not be an asshole and leave your long guns in the car… Is that really so much to ask? They do not want to be involved, so why would you be surprised when they ask you to not involve them?

([If you want a much less wordy, and much funnier explanation check out this fatass's video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R9qjQ-FswQ))

Now, before people get stupid and calling me a pusssy/wuss for not "STICKIN IT TO DA MAN", I told you there is a place for this. A political rally at your capital? Yes. A protest in a park? Yes. Involving someone that does not want to be involved? No. That is my point.

Hell, I have sat IN my state's capital, outside the Governor's chambers waiting to talk to him with a gun open carried. Why? Because it is public property and we have been protesting anti gun legislation.

Do you see the difference? I really hope you do. It has been far too long since I have written up an Open Carry post, I will try to not let it happen again.

Flame on below. I will try to respond as much as I can.

This is a discussion starter I posted on another forum. Figured you guys might enjoy/rip into it.

I agree with you. You're simply stating the obvious. We seem to be living in a Hey! Look at me! society these days.
For the most part I look at it as a Hey! Look at me! I'm retarded! society. More and more it seems common sense is either ignored or not understood...and that is something I don't understand.

That is the thing, these days it seems like we DO have to state the obvious. Kinda gets annoying.

Most of you know that I'm very pro OC, but even I hate what these asshats are doing to us. Posing with ANY gun in a store is stupid. When I OC, I don't go out to OC. I go to that business because they have a product, or service I need at that moment. I just happen to have my gun with me, it's not a prop. I don't go to the freezer section at WINCO with my 870 to fill my spring turkey tag. (but the mental image of that, you have to admit is kind of funny)

It's only "stupid" because creeping anti-gun mentality has resulted in many Americans thinking that the only place you should be able to OC is inside your own home... in a room with no windows. I'm pretty sure the intent of "bear arms" was not that you could only carry them while curled up in the fetal position in your bedroom closet.

We need to recondition the american mind such that people don't shit themselves when they see someone with a gun. I have been carrying guns for work since I was 18. I'm around other people OCing... Every day. It's normal. I don't get scared. I don't have a tizzy. I don't get on a forum and complain about other people doing it like a 4 year old girl. We need to man the hell up people. Would I go to Walmart with an AR? No, mostly because I don't like talking to people and I need my hands free to shop. If others don't mind to inconvenience, though, more power to them. The antis have already convinced people that packing heat in public is bad... now, according to some supposed 2A supporters, pushing in private is bad. WTF can we still bear arms? The closet? Is that it? Is the official 2A zone a 6'x8' room with a bunch of shoes, shirts, and pants hanging in it? I'm sorry, but that's officially pathetic.

there's a difference between exercising a right and being stupid...

you have the right to stand on the corner of a busy street and proclaim it's the end of the world... (freedom of speech) but when you see somebody doing that don't you think he's stupid?

same difference... just because you can doesn't mean you should...

there are bullheads that keep insisting we should act stupid because it's a right.. that's just being dumb..

I'll repeat this again,

a right not exercised has never been lost.... prove me wrong I'll buy you a beer...

name one right that was taken away because you did not use it... most rights that have been eliminated were secondary to it being used stupidly..

stop buying slogans and start thinking independently... slogans are designed for the sheeple who believe that anything that sounds right must be true...

again, prove me wrong..

People forget, this is a war not a battle.

You can not win every fight, you sometimes have to feint. Sometimes you have to fall back to regroup. The same policy applies.

very true.. and more lives are lost in war as a result of a politician's signature than bullets... using your votes wisely may actually save lives..

and while it was the courageous and brave thing to do in the 1700's standing in line while the other side is firing during battle and then hoping you survive is plain stupid...

just because it's courageous and brave doesn't mean it's smart...

You mean war evolves and tactics change? Astounding.
