So I picked these up today thinking they were pretty cool pieces of nostalgia... From the days of "duck and cover" in my 1960's elementary school classes. Both actually power up and seem to zero out just fine... Not a Geiger counter...this only picks up high doses of Gamma radiation...would be great if you're planning on visiting someplace like say...Chernobyl. But still a cool old piece of history, looks good on the shelf next to my emergency cans of drinking water and my Civil Defense hardhat! Oh the good ole days of the cold war...when our enemies were clear and defined.

Cool Don, a nice addition to the collection. Funny what you find at garage sales.

Pretty cool. I've never seen one of those.
Do you think they were made in the 60s? They look to be in really nice condition.

Turn it on and then make a call on your cell phone, hold it up to it and see if it registers.

Yeah they're from the 60's...They're not all that rare as there were over 500,000 of them made and none ever got used for testing after a nuclear attack So most are in, new, unused condition! I've seen a few around but these were pretty cheap and I was diggin on the box too. Just a cool old piece of history for the man cave. Or more shit for my kids to wonder WTF I bought this crap for, after I'm dead.

Holy cow, Don! Score! Today I got a couple peaked caps and two overseas caps from the German navy sometime in the 1920s.

I got 80rnds of 5.56 for a good price. Had a chance to buy quite a bit of old-school military gear, and even some that still had Afghan dust all over it...but man I already have a pile of that stuff.
Was looking for a good quality backpack but came up empty.

Was looking for a good quality backpack but came up empty. Too bad. There`re a million old backpacks out in my neck of the woods. Just need a good cleaning.

These were stored just about everywhere there was a "designated shelter" in the early 60's. Boxes of these along with the pen-like dosimeters were distributed to almost every High School back then as well.
If you ever turn one on and get a significant reading on it, start writing your will and write fast. Life is going to be real short. They weren't all that sensitive, just designed to see whether it was safe or not to leave the shelter, assuming you hadn't already died of dehydration/starvation.
I trained with these in the late 70's to get a FEMA certification as a "Radiation Monitor/Shelter Manager".
