Some of the stuff in the article is totally fine, rifles and mags. Even NVGs. The armored vehicles I'm kind of torn on. It kind of makes sense since many departments are taking a more aggressive stance towards active shooters now instead of just setting up a perimeter and hoping to wait the person out. They got tired of being called cowards after Columbine. And they remember the LAPD having to borrow ARs from a gun store (even though Boxer I think it was wanted to prosecute the store and police for transferring the ARs without background checks) and armored trucks from one of the armored car companies... Wells Fargo or Loomis... one of those kind.

This overlooks a big point, is that a lot of this stuff the police get free via DRMO. Their budgets are razor thin, so if you see a pair of NVG, or some helmets on DRMO, it is a pretty good way to get it - free.
Our SWAT team has a Bearcat, it gets some use. They do a lot of violent suspect apprehension and serving warrants in bad areas.
But your basic officer on patrol, he's got a vest and maybe a "patrol rifle" if he's lucky, otherwise a shotty. That's it. Most of the patrol rifles I have seen are ARs (semi auto), not M16s.

Reason being that US Law does not allow the Military to operate against US Civilians. To skirt this the .Gov has turned the Nations Police into a de facto Army......Ever wonder why the USDA has issued sub guns and body armor to its inspectors??? Like a side of beef or a chicken is going to turn rouge
